Ten Forward Weekly 14.07.2021: Q&A with QA!

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 01:48 AM PDT

    Link: Twitch, Facebook

    Topic: Q&A with QA

Guests: QA lead Jeremy Hymel and test analyst Christian Griffith

My brains are fried by the heat (I hate "hot summer" part of continental climate). Mike posts the stream announcements last moment or not at all. The backlog grows. Fun.

    • Jeremy's favourite bug is "tribble dart".
      • Christian's one is missing floater animations on Risa that result in walking on the skies.
    • They once oopsed and C-Store ship had weapon that had actual cost and could be sold repeatedly.
    • Although Jeremy would prefer to always test console stuff on physical consoles, sometimes that's impossible for one or other reason and they have to use emulators.
    • All test kits have wire connections, not just to eliminate connection concerns, but also in a name of security.
    • The most annoying bug for the whole QA team is the issues with warp-out animations.
    • Most frustrating for Christian is when he fails to replicate bug internally, even with reliable instructions, end then meets it when he logs to normal server.
    • Work-from-home severely worsened the game of broken phone, where chain of communication may break, for example dil store sale that was supposed to go along with vanity shields' sale that didn't happen.
    • Mike agrees that crossplay would be nice thing to have, the base code is too old to include such capability.
    • Christian thought that the craziest bug he saw was when PvP matches reset people down to lvl 1.
    • When testing content, testers try it with both their own builds that are at least decent or better, with good builds and, but also with purposely horribad ones to see that it's still playable - they have both good and bad presets.
      • Technically Jem'Hadar character is an example of such thing.
        • Jeremy, visiting via chat, added this: "Pre-Built Containers (like Jem'Hadar) are very time consuming for us to build internally, and it kinda violates the concept of player choice, too."
      • During consideration of how lvl65 boost should work making it like that was considered.
    • Jeremy considers painful part of the job when he solves the major bug after patch was assembled (especially on consoles, where you also need to certify), but before it's applied and he has to call people and tell them to do over what they just did, but with bugfix included.
    • One thing Christian would want removed from STO is injuries.

IDK. Brain just stopped several times during the writing. Literally unwell from the heat.

    How does it look?

There appears to be a massive failure in the ship's structural integrity. I blame Daniels.

    Cutscenes Unskippable on PS4/PS5

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 07:27 AM PDT

All cutscenes--regardless whether they are in Missions or TFOs--are completely unskippable. The issue started after one of the last content patches.

The Lohlunat Fest has been an absolute delight. In spite of the many patches exploding the game harder than an ensign sneezing on an Oberth, It's my mini vacation at the end of the day.

What really makes it is all of you guys, with your crazy toons, emotes and pets during the dance off. I just want to say a general thank you to the community for really making this year's festival something really memorable. You guys rock and are eff'in hilarious.

What made you fall in love with STO?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 10:12 AM PDT

Way back when you first started, or maybe even later, was/were there any particular moment(s) that made you fall in love with the game?

    For me, there were two:

The first was when I got my first ship post-tutorial as a Fed. My entry into the game was launch-day on PS4, and they gave players a free T1 Andorian Light Escort to claim for trying out the game at launch. It was beautiful... It was sleek, shiny, and the cannons had such an amazing-feeling "pew pew" for a first-time player. The Orions were hopeless before me. I loved it.

The second moment, which made me fall in love even more, was when I launched the T2 Dhael warbird on my first Romulan. I'm biased for Romulans, as it is; but, flying this ship hammered-home how much I was going to love the remaining Romulan content. IMO, it was much nicer to fly than comparable T2 ships from the other two factions--it was sleek-looking, it had the bells/whistles I cared about, and it was amazing flying it against the Hirogen, Nausicaans, and Cardassians.

It gives me that nice feeling of nostalgia when I remember those moments, and it reminds me of what the game does really well when at its best.

So, again, are there any moments where you're like "yeah...there's when I fell in love with this thing."?

Just a reminder that while some of you are enjoying your month of shore leave, someone has to keep the Alliance running...

Kinda frustrated/bummed that the Red Angel Suit is a different price from every other item.

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 10:36 AM PDT

So I specifically saved enough Dil to get 2k Zen figuring that's how much all previous event items have cost in Mudd's (at 75% off). Ships are 4250 each, a few Boffs are 1k each, you 'save' on the TOS holo Boffs because you get a bunch for 2500. But every other item that has come to the store that was any other item from an event has been 2k Zen, but now this suit is 3k... I've been waiting all week for this to come out so I could finally get it and then they don't even announce the price when it's not following the norm.

Why did we ever invite the Deferi to mutual defense conferences?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:38 AM PDT

Replaying 'The Second Wave', 'Surface Tension' and 'Time and Tide', I genuinely have to wonder why we invite the useless ambassadors of the Deferi to anything.

Their very nature is to not intervene in anything because of 'Balance' - they won't get involved in any conflicts and are willing to let us die to maintain the 'Balance'. They're genuinely terrible and cannot be counted on as allies because of this cultural mindset.

I'm grateful they've kinda gone by the wayside in recent content because it baffles me as to why we even bother bringing them along to these conferences.

Also, they may or may not be responsible for our most recent reformed war criminal!

Is any of these 3 Pets good / which one is better? And is the Red Angel Suit worth it ?

Edit: Thanks everyone, bought the Elachi Walker and damn its loud :D

Returning to the world of sto is overwhelming

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:33 AM PDT

Im returning to sto for the 5th or 6th time (everytime a new movie or series comes out i have to pilot a ship again)

As much as i love the ships, the travel, locations and nostalgia. I have never fully grasped the best way to level and play this game.

I have a lvl 65 klingon federation fleet admiral and and a lvl 30 discovery captain

I have the t-6 galaxy and the t-6 soverign with the other galaxy class that has saucer seperation i think.

Any discord fleets willing to teach me some things? I have spent some money on unlocks in the past and i really want to try to get the most out of this game.

    Ground PvP Question.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 08:48 PM PDT

There are a number of different things that one-shotted me, but I don't remember the names of all of them.

Something called "Quick Shot", which I haven't been able to identify at the wiki.
    Anyone know what that is?

Bio-Essense Transfer one-shotted me often enough.

Agony Field Generator seems popular in PvP, but since it was always on my own team I couldn't test to see if Adapt is an effective counter to it.

    Current Universal Endeavor

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:24 AM PDT

I'm not sure why cryptic chooses to include a PvP match as a Universal Endeavor, not something I have ever participated in and chose not to do. My main toon is at the level of what I would consider average, not beginner and not elite. It's something I never chose to do.

How do you feel about PvP Matches? Do you participate in them?
