Space visual clutter actually impacting player performance

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 06:00 AM PDT

As we all know, anecdotal evidence of a problem is best evidence of a problem. So here we go:

I'm running the Remain Klingon queue for the event. Before each run starts, I type out in team chat how you need to get over to the green-circled dreadnought if youre targeted, etc. During the run I also send PMs to players who are targeted, but dont seem to be doing anything to actually fly to the dreadnought they're supposed to, reminding them of this objective. It actually usually works and I can see them suddenly speed up to reach the dread.

This one person however PMs me back along the lines of: "Thanks, I couldnt see the target marker". I didnt think much of it. However the second time they were targeted, and their ship has again shown no evidence of their captain being aware of the situation, Ive sent them another reminder - which again worked. Later when the run ended the person PMs me explaining again how they could not see the marker on their ship and thanking me for assistance.

Now this got me thinking and led me to making this post. Has there been enough particles on this persons screen that their game just didnt render the (very important mind you) effect? I can see my own weapon fire sometimes stopping mid flight or outright disappearing in dense situations. Perhaps the same happens to more and more visual effects on weaker systems. Or were they this dazzled by the light show that their mind just didnt register the reticle appearing over their ship?

Bottom line is, we could really use some setting to limit visual effects that appear onscreen. Especially those which dont really telegraph anything.

So i logged in after patch and wanted to create a new char. but game says i am at max and need to purchase new slots with zen.

Before logout i had 5 remaining slots to create chars. Maybe i should have created the char earlier today.

PC: missing two character slots after maintenance!

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 09:48 AM PDT

So you have 9 character slots without lifetime sub, and I purchased another 4 not long ago. That would make 13 slots. Curiously, I made another disco toon only two days ago to check on something but deleted him afterwards. Now after maintenance the game menu shows that I have no slots left with my 11 characters. I'm sure I still had 2 extra slots before the maintenance and patch.

So the best thing to avoid such slot assassination is to fill your roster with dummy characters, or what? Oh boy!

EDIT: game launcher and ARC support site still mention maintenance, so let's see if things correct themselves sooner or later. Dummy characters for filling all slots afterwards - that's for sure!

EDIT2: filling all slots won't help as you get extra slots removed after deleting toons. Arc Games support site still mentions maintenance, so nothing else we can do but wait and hope for the best until Arc is fully up.

    Cut scenes

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 08:15 AM PDT

I really try not to complain too much about STO. I do truly love this game and I can usually forgive glitches and bugs and such. Building an interactive galaxy is a hell of an undertaking. I couldn't do it, so I try not to bitch too much about oopsies.

But not being able to skip cut scenes is making not want to play. Missions that I usually replay so that my alts can get specific gear now take so much longer that I just don't even bother. It's not that I don't care about the story within the missions. It's just that I've already seen them all a bunch of times. So they should probably fix. Cause right now I just log on, do doff and r&d for each character, do the event and log off. Upside is I have a lot more time to binge watch stuff instead of playing games.

    Dear Whoever You Are:

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 11:55 AM PDT

We knew it was going to be rough when the first player bailed on Khitomer In Stasis before the group had fully assembled. The remaining four of us wound our way down the corkscrew caves, and judging by how quickly we were respawning, none of us were walking around with elite gear.

And that's when the second quitter packed it in. We were down to three by the time one of us had to stay behind and shut down forcefields around the power nodes. That one of us was you, leaving me and--

Whoops, just me. With just one node down, it was you and I, the last of the die-hards. While you fought off waves of Borg and continuously shut down the same field over and over, gamely hanging in there despite my limited ability to deal enough damage to destroy the nodes, I tried to do right by you. We communicated solely by forcing cyborg PA announcements, and while it took me a full load of pets and special powers that had to cool down every time we destroyed a node, you heard the message loud and clear: someone out there wasn't giving up, either.

And with a couple minutes to spare, we knocked out the last node, destroyed the two isolinear molecular reconverters, and reunited to take down Tosk of Borg.

We were legends. We didn't ride around in a pickup truck with chrome-plated trucknuts; we were the pickup group with duranium-plated Treknuts. We stormed the final room and beat down Tosser of Borg with a cybernetic can of whoop-implant. Over a half-hour later, we leapt in victory and announced our GGs.

And because I'm forgetful, I didn't catch your handle, but you know who you are: a pistol-slinging badass who wouldn't leave someone behind in the field of battle. Thank you. Thank you for playing the same game I played, refusing to bail when the going got tough. May RNG Jesus forever bless you with awesome drops and Epic rewards.

    Sincerely,

    A kindred spirit

Galaxy at Large worth it? Also, Remans.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 09:13 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I played STO a few years ago and have a level 65 TOS character and want to get back into the game with a new character. I want to do a Romulan Republic Tactical officer and would quite like to play as a Reman. I saw on the wiki that if you get level 5 on the Romulan reputation it unlocks a Reman but I can see any other references. Is this true? I don't want to end up getting Romulan reputation to 5 if I don't need it.

Also, I was reading the mission log and saw the "Galaxy at Large" arcs. Which of the arcs are actually worth doing e.g. story progression and the quality of the missions. I played Wasteland as Starfleet and quite enjoyed it but I haven't touched any of the others. I also saw that Spectres, Lost Dominion and Cold War are only available from level 65+. Is it worth grinding up to level 65 then going back and playing all of the arcs that don't fit into the storyline or just skipping them?

    Thanks.

PSA: do NOT buy the "Epic Starter Pack Bundle". You'll be stuck with a bundle you cannot redeem/access, and neither Arc Support nor Epic Games will help you or issue a refund!

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 07:07 PM PDT

Don't buy the Epic Starter Bundle. Arc broke it, and you won't get your items or a refund.

    Prologue

Hearing some fleet-mates mention the Epic Starter bundle as a way to get an Epic Phoenix Token, I thought I'd finally try out this newfangled Epic Games launcher and starter pack bundle that Arc released late last year: https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11479353-star-trek-online-on-the-epic-games-store%21

I missed out on the Ferengi Warship back in the day, and I've been eying the Gagarin and the Titan as interesting T6 Ships.

So, I found the advertisement again on Arc, went to the Epic Games site, and found the Epic Games Starter Pack bundle (https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p/star-trek-online--epic-starter-pack-bundle). The one Arc advertises as "a third option to play in the final frontier", and a "a great way to start or continue your adventures in the quadrants." And thus began a torment more arduous than a run of Gravity Kills with a team of two players who don't pay attention and an AFKer.

    Day 1 - May 25, 2021

Fool that I was, I purchased the Epic Games Starter Pack.

Unlike for my fleetmates, who upon downloading the Epic Games Launcher and launching STO encountered a screen that enabled them to link their Arc Account and their STO account, my attempt to launch STO merely created a new account (same username, but with a bunch of numbers after it).

I contacting Arc Support immediately, asking them to please transfer the bundle to the correct account. Arc Support advised that they could not, and told me to contact Epic Games for a refund.

Arc Support wrote, May 25, 2021:

I understand that you purchased on the Epic website and it created a new account instead of applying the pack to your Arc account. Please note that purchases on Epic will go to your Epic account. For your Arc account, you need to purchase on the Arc client/website or use your Steam wallet.

Sadly, we are unable to transfer packs from one account to another. You would need to contact Epic and request a refund in this case.

    Day 2 - May 26, 2021

As instructed by Arc Support, I contacted Epic Games. Epic Games told me to contact Arc Support to resolve the problem.

Epic Games wrote, May 26, 2021:

Now, please be kindly advised that the Epic Starter Pack can be claimed in the Starter Packs tab of the in game Zen Store after purchase.

For further information, please refer to the link below:

    https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p/star-trek-online--epic-starter-pack-bundle

Regarding your Cryptic account issue, I'll do my best to guide you in the right direction!

I don't want to waste a second of your precious time, so I have to kindly let you know that we at Epic Games Player Support are unable to assist you with these account issues it is out of our scope, and believe me, I don't want to provide you with incorrect information and make things worse!

However, our partners from Cryptic Studios will be able to review your case. They have access to data that is not available to us and they will be able to investigate the matter, and hopefully provide you with the resolution we're looking for. You can reach out to them by clicking on the link below:https://support.arcgames.com/hc/en-us My apologies for the inconvenience and for being unable to assist you with this humble request myself, however, I'd like to reassure you that you're in good hands with Cryptic Studios.

So, as instructed by Epic Games, I wrote back to Arc Support. I attached a copy of my email thread with Epic, and ask that this issue please be corrected per Epic Games' reply to me.

    Day 3 - May 27, 2021

Turns out that sometime after launch, Arc quietly got rid of the ability to link Epic Games and STO accounts

    Arc Support, May 27, 2021:

I was informed that the reason for the players receiving the pack before is that linking the Arc and Epic account was previously possible. Since the recent changes don't let players link these accounts anymore, the pack can't be purchased for old Arc accounts anymore. You would need to let the support in Epic escalate the issue for the refund of the pack so that it can be granted.

This came as a surprise: nothing I had seen on either the Arc or Epic websites mentioned that this bundle was for new accounts only, or mentioned that the Epic Games Launcher now requires a new and wholly separate STO account not linked in any way to an existing STO account.

    I wrote, May 27, 2021:

    Thank you for following up.

    1. You indicated that *players* cannot link Epic and Arc accounts; thank you for clarifying this. Is this posted anywhere on your website or Epic's website?

    2) Can Arc Support still link accounts?

Per my support request through Epic Games, which I attached yesterday, Epic is claiming that you (Arc Support) can fix this...

Turns out, Arc has chosen not to advertise the removal of this linking.

Arc Support wrote, May 27, 2021:

    Thanks for the fast reply.

Sadly, it was not posted on our website. I am not sure if Epic did post about it on their end. Since the linking feature was disabled, we do not have the ability to link accounts anymore.

I understand that the support in Epic claims that we can do it. Unfortunately, we can't. I already escalated it for review if we can transfer packs and I was told that we do not have the ability to do so.

Given Arc Support's insistence that Epic Games would issue a refund, I thought perhaps the problem was on their end.

    I wrote, May 27, 2021:

Likewise, thank you for your quick reply. I appreciate your efforts to help.

    Very frustrated/disappointed with Cryptic/Arc/Epic, though.

Before I go back to Epic to try and get a refund, one last question. Did Arc disable linking, or did Epic disable linking?

Turns out, Arc games caused the problem.

Arc Games wrote, May 27, 2021

Thanks for the reply and for your patience.

I will submit your feedback to the developers for review. It was disabled on Arc's end.

As instructed, I contacted Epic Games again to request a refund. Epic Games continued to refuse to issue a refund, and continued to claim that Arc Support could fix the problem. I replied rather snarkily, pointing out that I had already attached the lengthy chain of emails with Arc Support confirming that they could not fix the problem and saying that Epic Games would issue a refund.

    Day 4 - May 28, 2021 - Epic Games

Turns out that Epic Games believes people can pay for things with fake money.

Epic Games wrote, May 28, 2021

Allow me to explain that Starter packs are purchased with real money so it is not eligible for a return.

Thank you for your understanding and please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

This answer did, indeed, leave me with questions. As invited, I replied with my questions.

Unlike Arc Support, who throughout this process took the time to read and digest my emails, Epic Games continued to ignore my replies (and the correspondence with Arc) in favor of canned replies. This new response, however, was a level of inanity I didn't expect. Where logic and reason (and patience and copying in my lengthy email chains with Arc) had failed, it seemed the time had come to try excessive sarcasm.

    I wrote, May 28, 2021

I always pay for things with "real" money: if you try to pay with "fake" money, you go to jail.

    Allow me to explain:

    A) I bought the Epic Starter Pack Bundle, with "real money".

    B) I have not received the Epic Starter Pack Bundle on my account.

    C) Arc Games Support says they cannot add it to my account, and I should get a refund from you.

Where I come from, taking "real money" without giving what the customer paid for is called theft. Is it the same where you are?

Shockingly, this did not produce either a refund or a reply.

    Day 4 - May 28, 2021 - Arc Support

After waiting the day without further reply, I wrote again to Arc Support to suggest a new approach.

    I wrote, May 28, 2021

So, per the attached, Epic Games says they won't issue a refund. I wrote back, very snarkily, as they appear to be ignoring my lengthy correspondence with you (who have specifically instructed me to get a refund via Epic Games). It appears that they are now ignoring me altogether, as I have yet to receive a further reply. After fuming at their most recent inane reply (and Arc's apparently secret decision to stop linking accounts without actually advertising this anywhere), I calmed down a bit.

Since Epic isn't issuing me a refund, and since you can't link my account or transfer the "Epic Starter Bundle" onto my account, I thought I'd ask if a third solution was possible.

There are 8 things in the Epic Starter Bundle. I care about the following 4, in order of priority:

    1. Epic Phoenix Prize Token (the whole reason I bought the blessed bundle in the first place).
    2. Tier 6 Ship Coupon
    3. Epic Services Starter Pack
    4. Combat Trained Tardigrade.

I went on to ask if Arc Support could simply add these items to my account (and delete the Epic account)?

    Day 6 - May 30, 2021

Arc Support indicated that they could not add the items to my account, and advised me to wait for a refund.

    Arc Support

I understand that this issue is frustrating you. However, we really can't manually transfer the items from the pack even after closing the other account. It might have been taking some time for Epic to reply and they might not have been ignoring the ticket. It is just that the ticket might be under going an investigation or further review. Please do wait for their reply about your refund request.

    So, as requested, I waited.

    Day 20 - June 13, 2021

Having heard nothing further from either Arc Support or Epic Games for two weeks, it seemed appropriate to reach out again. In the intervening period, Arc released the most recent Mudd's Bundle. Lo and behold, it contains both an Epic Pheonix Prize Token and T6 ship coupons as options. Now, the main elements of the Epic Starter Pack are all available through the Zen Store!

Arc Support might not be able to link accounts, and might not be able to add items to an account, and might not be able to force Epic Games to refund a purchase made for STO and from which Arc profited. Arc Support definitely can, however, add/refund Zen to an account.

    I wrote, June 13, 2021:

So, it has been two weeks since my last email to Epic Games. I have heard nothing in reply to my last email. Should I continue to wait, and if so for how long? Can you confirm that I will receive a refund, and if so when?

I question whether Arc cannot fix this. You have just released the Mudds bundle, which contains both T6 ship tokens AND an Epic Token. The Zen store already contains the Elite Services Bundle and the Tardigrade.

    Mudd's Bundle = 14750 (currently) for 3 choices. 1 Epic token = 1 choice, 1 T6 Ship Coupon = 1/2 choice = 7,375 Zen

Elite Services Starter Pack = 1,000 Zen

Combat Trained Tardigrade = 400 Zen

Total Zen for Arc to deliver upon (the parts I care about from) what it advertised and what I bought: = 8775 Zen refund.

I know you have the power to put Zen back into players' accounts. You thus have the power to fix the situation that Arc created when it silently removed the ability for players to get what they paid for, and didn't update advertising to specify this wonderful deal (that Arc loudly trumpeted as a new way to log into the game) is now, in fact, only for brand new accounts.

I respectfully request that Arc display a little ownership of fixing the problem it created. If you cannot make Epic issue me a refund, then would you instead provide or refund the Zen needed for me to separately put together the bundle of things that I have paid for, but haven't received?

    Day 22 - June 15, 2021

Turns out that Arc is happy to keep players' money from the purchase of the Epic Starter Pack while choosing to not issue a refund or deliver on its contents:

Arc Support wrote, June 15, 2021:

I am afraid we cannot provide an adequate answer regarding your refund request with Epic Games. As for the Zen request, the Lead GM for Star Trek Online already reviewed your concern as mentioned previously, but I am afraid there is no other resolution we can offer for the situation. The issue can only be resolved by a refund from the merchant of purchase which is Epic Games.

The above does not appear, to me, to be strictly accurate, in-so-far as it is imprecise in its use of the word "we". I accept that the Arc Support minions (who, again, have been professional and have engaged with my inquiries and questions) cannot offer any resolution, because they are not allowed to offer any resolution. Arc/Cryptic/Perfect World, on the other hand, clearly can offer another resolution. There would seem to be three resolution options that Arc/Cryptic/Perfect World are capable of implementing:

    a) refunding the purchase of the Epic Games Starter Pack, via their sales partner Epic Games;

    b) linking the Epic Games account to the existing Arc account, like they have done for all the other players who purchased the bundle before Arc Games decided to remove the ability to link accounts, thereby enabling access to the purchased bundle (and the use of the Epic Games Launcher as "a third option to play in the final frontier"); or,

    c) providing/refunding sufficient Zen to enable the purchase of the bits of the Epic Games Starter Pack that matter from the Zen store (Epic Phoenix Token, T6 ship coupon (x1), Elite Services Starter Bundle, and Tardigrade.)

Arc/Cryptic/Perfect world are choosing, however, to continue to keep my money and to try to redirect me to Epic Games who (as both author and reader are likely both sick of repeating by this point) have refused to issue a refund because Arc Support can apparently fix the issue.

    The Future...

At this point, I expect my money is gone forever. Given Arc's unfortunate oversight in the advertising department has caused both me and the long-suffering Arc Support serfs such grief, I thought the least I could do was to help them out a little by remedying the lack of publicity with respect to the removal of the ability to link Epic and Arc accounts. It won't help any poor new players who have yet to discover r/sto , of course, but perhaps it might help one of you.

tl;dr: don't buy the Epic Starter Pack, and seriously consider whether you want to spend money on a game whose studio chooses to inaccurately advertise their products and then chooses to neither issue a refund nor provide what the player was told they were buying.

    On-demand patching?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 09:40 AM PDT

Has STO gone to on-demand patching on PC?

I've noticed after the last several updates that patching on my first login afterwards goes a lot faster than it used to, but loading map changes within the game takes quite a bit longer. (Also for a while during a map change it'd say something like "Loading file xxx...." although it doesn't do that any more.)

If that's what happened, I like the change.
