Ten Forward Weekly 02.12.2020: Winter is Coming

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:48 PM PST

    Link: Twitch, Facebook

    Theme: Winter is Coming

Guests: lead ship and UI artist Thomas Marrone, system designer Jeremy Randall and character artist Amelia March

    • Sky for winter event was edited to look better. In particular it won't be so fogged in.
    • Amelia designed new sweaters because she thought that nowadays people need bright things.
      • When drawing the ascending shape, she was inspired by drawings of ascending plane/rocket.
    • Q's chair's assets were already in game, they just needed to implement it properly.
    • The dog is normal enough that it's just a normal pet and nothing would happen to it when event ends, unlike the previous winter pets who go inert.
    • They are currently thinking about making more hangar pets squadrons, specifically when exactly to unleash them and how to make them available.
      • Likely squadrons would be implemented along with respective ships.
      • They're looking at options for allowing players to exchange regular variants for squadron ones.
    • Thing forgotten in the blog: there's new Rainbow Eppoh fiend friend.
    • Gok'tad is actually made out of parts instead being a single piece and they are interchangeable with Kar'Fi so you can kitbash them together.
    • The goal for redesign was to keep the general shape, but make the ship less blocky and more curvy.
    • Thomas: "To keep something from being elegant really all you have to do is add spikes."
      • Without the spikes ship really lacked "evil ancient ship" feel.
    • Console power was inspired by the visuals.
      • Console fire damage doesn't scale with any regular consoles.
    • Fek'Ihri ships were influenced by the old Norse ships, with figureheads and such.
    • The fact that several winter ships were Fek'Ihri was used as a justification to make the old T5 Kar'Fi cross-faction.
    • Accidental reveal: new lockbox ship is Synth Pilot Destroyer.
      • It's from infinity lockbox, not a special one.
    • Andre is generally chill with accidental stream reveals, unlike Ricossa.
    • There's some new costume that's already in test build but isn't being released yet.
    • The issue that basic version of Lost Souls is the best is known and they're searching for what's holding down more advanced variants.
      • They think that in general more advanced pets' AI gets confused while recieving more weapons and abilities.
    • Original design thought behind Kar'Fi was to make it a carrier that as much different from Vo'Quv as possible, hence heavy tactical lean, while still sci ship.
    • Console's ramming strike does AoE, so you you can group enemies you'd hit several.
    • Fek'Ihri consoles not being a set is a design decision.
    • They're aware about "Breaking the Wall" mission being broken and are working on it.
    • Apparently, it's not guaranteed that next summer ship would be T6 version of Risian cruiser.
      • It's likely there won't be another design contest, even though they enjoyed the one we had.

We need more modern Flight Deck Carriers!

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 06:46 AM PST

Fun fact: out of the 16 T6 Flight Deck Carriers in the game, 94% of them are fucking ancient. The most modern ones of these are the Discovery-era Donnie and Dsc-7. These are 150 years old. Past that, we have the Enterprise-era Pralim, Blackguard, and Silik, which are 250 years old. The Iconians have been chilling in Andromeda for 200,000 years; it's safe to assume that the Herald Fleet is at least thousands of years old. And finally, Voth ships are built by literal dinosaurs.

The only modern FDC is the Cardassian Ghemor. That's the only one that's not over a hundred years old. There's tons of room for new models or modern refits, like what the Federation DSC ships got. There are no Romulan or Jem'Hadar FDCs, too. I know there's issues with balance between normal carriers and FDCs, and that we did just get a full set of carriers, but we really could use some fresh faces in the line-up.

Also, just an idea here, but the Constellation and the Kamarag are both in dire need of T6 refits, and they both have plenty of space to fit a hangar bay.

    A Couple Thoughts and Questions...

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 07:16 AM PST

First - let me point out this is like only the third or fourth time I've ever posted on Reddit, so if I'm out of line or screwing it up, my apologies. I'm in my early forties and haven't quite gotten the hang of this wild, modern technology.

Next - opinion question - is this forum an effective way to offer suggestions to the developers? That is to say, will they be seen, read, or considered, even a little?

Third - I've been playing STO for, like, ten years now. I'm a lifetime member, I've spent way too much money on it, etc. Ridicule me if you must...but overall, I love the game. Frankly, especially lately, in some pretty dark times, it's been a huge part of my sanity (or whatever remains of it).

As such, I am understandably frustrated with some stuff, but also have ideas (most of which I'd call pretty minor) for improvements here and there.

For example: today's major time off for maintenence...

They're fixing the size of the Phase Pistol. That's great. That's cool. I'm 110% behind as much accuracy and detail as possible.

But there are some pretty big issues that could really use attention. The tailor service on PC, for example; it's still totally broken, and has been for weeks now. I get that there's a workaround...I know, I use it. But...damn guys.

"At The Gates" on Kobali Prime. Come on.

And I know (well, I've read) that these issues are being addressed...but is it unreasonable for us to seek further information, or an idea of when they'll be fixed?

    As for ideas...

A more vibrant, thorough, universal color palette across the board, as opposed to...um... Jesus, how many are there? I'm blanking... Five? Six?

An upgrade or higher detail refit to some of the older uniforms? The TWOK uniforms, for example, could use some sprucing up, and/or some additional details added.

The ability to use, say, all Federation badges on all Federation uniforms/costumes? Or even the ability to use multiple rank insignia on multiple uniforms? I get that something like that wouldn't be "canon," but that's part of the charm of the game...the opportunity for creativity.

I'm sure this post might be considered "flameworthy" in its naiveté; but my intent is to start a detailed, constructive, creative, and if possible, positive conversation.

    I welcome thoughts, information, etc.

Why is there a fleet of DSC-Era Ships (and some others) frozen over Earth spacedock?

They took out my favorite part of the KDF tutorial.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:14 PM PST

Created a new character to do KDF tutorial for the first time with the update for Klingon Civil War. In the warehouse when you're looking for Ch'Gren, they took out the part where you punch the Ferengi. Now he just cowers in fear. Used to run around screaming until you punched him and he collapsed in a heap.

    height question

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:18 PM PST

Does anyone know how tall the "Captains"( Captain Koren, Captain Shon, and Commander Jarok) from the solanae dyson sphere/iconian war arc are?

I'm asking because All of them are taller than my captain, who's 5'7". Koren's gotta be at least 5'11" and it just reminds me of the "spartans! what is your profession!" meme

I've searched for an answer but I haven't one yet. Does anyone know if I dismiss this officer can I get another one? I know it says one per character, but I'm not sure how that applies if I dismiss them. I want to switch them from tactical to sci.

How long have you been playing STO? What do you think about the game?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 05:19 AM PST

I've been playing STO, since the very first day always with breaks and I've to say it's always the same. I would have expected that the game evolves more and gets more advanced mechanics in 10 years time.

It's too little content, once the episode missions are released it takes me 1-2 days to play through them and then? Nothing just boring. I don't want to do the same TFO for the 1000 time.

The game could be SOOOOO much better, just by changing some mechanics.

If the foundry would be Upgraded, so that you could work collaboratively on missions AND that you'd have all the tools the Devs have, fans would create SOOO much quality content. They already do, but foundry missions ain't got no real rewards and there are limits to what can be created in them. I think it would even be ok, to have micro payments for such foundry mission's, if they include cutscenes, proper stories, if there is a proper narrator, etc. I'd pay 50-100 zen, why not. I think it would even be right if there would be proper mission rewards. If half of the money goes to the developer of the mission and half to Cryptic everyone is happy. And there will be HIGH end content.

Then there is this power play. The game is all about buff stacking. Nothing else. And that's boring and not realistic at all. For example, how can a ship have 95% resistance against weapons, sorry but that's power gaming and it's not fun at all. It leads to people building extrem ships who can only defend or what ever, but that's not Star Trek anymore. I'd scrap all the power builds. I do get it, that buffs are nice but pure buff stacking, more and more is not fun. And science ships don't open gravity wells..... Scrap all this shit. Make the ships more complex, but set some rules, sorry but a torpedo bay can't be replaced by a phaser arch.

I still don't get why there is no map designer... Fans would have created complete ship interiors if there would be such a tool. And tbh. I'm much more interested in that, than in buff stacking pvp. There are better games for pvp honestly. The ship building is to plump, that could be SOOOOO much more sophisticated. I mean hell its a STARSHIP. The fleet bases are basically useless. And I don't know why I should not be able to automatise dilithium refining and reputation. I don't see gameplay in clicking on one button for the dilithium. My god just do it automatically. I don't know why someone who goes online is a better player than someone who just plays casually. That alienates me from the game tbh. I don't know why Romulans and Jem'hadar have to be allies to some one. No thank you, I don't want. The missions are almost al multi faction anyways so why should I be allied to someone. Give me my own faction.

All in all I think the game could be SOOOOO much better.

    What are your thoughts?
