Does STO lend itself well to very casual play?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 07:53 AM PDT

Lifelong Star Trek fan here. Absolutely love the 90s shows especially (with DS9 being my favorite show of all time). Unfortunately I just don't have the time to invest in another MMO right now. Full time worker, have a 1 year old, and I already play LOTRO with my wife and FFXIX in between patches. I love the idea of just having my own ship, being able to explore the interior, and explore other places from the shows like DS9. Looking for something to just relax to and enjoy for nostalgia purposes, and see where it goes from there. Does STO lend itself alright to this type of very casual/sightseeing gameplay? Or would it really take investing some time into for it to be worth it? Weird question I know, but thank you!

Devs, please remove this huge black object in the Voyager 2409 interrior! It has been this way since the last patch. We use this ship interior for our roleplay and we would be very grateful for a quick fix!

    Promo ship vs 1500 lobi

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 07:01 AM PDT

According to spencer who opened 12k lockboxes lobi averages 5.4 per lockbox (rather than the 4 that is the general assumption).

With keys at ~10m EC each and $11.25=10 keys / (on sale) $8=10 we can calculate it as thus...

1500 (lobi) ÷ 5.4 (lobi per box) = 277.7777777777778 boxes required. As one cannot open 0.7 of a box we'll round that up to 278 keys required. Which at a 10m EC valuation per key is 2,780,000,000 EC. In real world cash that's 278 ÷ 10 = 27.8 which at full price is $312.75. At sale it's $222.40.

Using the old general assumption of ~4 lobi per box it's 375. Which is of course 3,750,000,000 EC. In real world cash that's 375 ÷ 10 = 37.5 which at full price is $421.88. At sale it's $300.

Promo ships average 1.5 to 1.8 billion EC. Maybe 1.4 if Crosis is on.

So looking at the pure raw value using cost of acquisition the 1500 lobi is worth nearly double to ~2.5 times more depending on if you go with the 4 or 5.4 lobi per box figures.

And we have to look at pure raw value as cost of acquisition because if we're calculating resell value then since the promo ship acquired via this event will be account bound it effectively has zero resell value as it's not possible.

The lobi however. Lobi ships tend to sell for around 270-350m depending on how long it's been since the last sale. Common sentiment is assume 300m or trade T6 coupons for them which have roughly the same trade value. With a fairly large lobi sale you might be able to acquire two. So around 600m EC resale value for 1500 lobi. Obviously considerably less than cost of acquisition typically.

Generally you're better off just paying EC for lobi items than lobi, if they're lobi items that are tradable. I'd personally assume the lobi's value is instead for stuff like consoles and weapons which cannot be traded. So I think for a lot of people it ends up being a question of slightly improving one character (promo) or possibly improving numerous characters significantly (lobi).

I still don't really know what I'm going to do personally. I do need Weapon Emitter Overdrive from the Vaadwaur Miracle Worker Juggernaut (promo ship). Though I also need the Ba'ul Linked Sentry (Omni+console) 2-piece which is lobi. I also need Terran Goodbye from the Mirror Warship (Connie) which is a lockbox ship.

Realistically I think if I was actually going to pay EC for Mirror Warship and Vaadwaur Miracle Worker Juggernaut that works out to around 2.5 billion EC which is less than the lobi would cost by at least 280 million. And for stuff like consoles & weapons I would have to pay the EC or zen for the master keys. So maybe the lobi is better...

What do you all think is better?

    The Endeavor Sink is Terrible

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 09:47 AM PDT

Cryptic just announced that Endeavor reroll tokens will be removed as possible rewards and instead we'll have to pay several thousand dilithium for them.

This is an ineffectual dilithium sink and only pushes away casual players.

It's an ineffectual sink, because it fails to affect either supply or demand for dilithium. The vast stockpiles of dilithium ore are not dependent on endeavors for generation. The people with plentiful access to dilithium or willingness to buy are the same ones who are already pretty much done with the Endeavor system. The people who still need to do the daily Endeavor grind are the casual crowd who don't have ludicrous amounts of dilithium.

It pushes away casual players, because all it does is tell them that they're better off not bothering to play longer for that day, since rerolling Endeavor's for a compatible reward isn't worth the ridiculous dilithium price. Endeavors are supposed to make players feel rewarded for sticking with a session of the game. Bad Endeavor tasks, such as those for dead queues or prohibitive barriers to entry, only turn an attempted session of the game into a negative experience.

The fundamental problem with trying to tie Endeavors into this is that it turns bad Endeavor rolls into bad experiences that nobody wants to pay dilithium for.

    Skill Point Confusion

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 09:15 AM PDT

    Skill Point Confusion

I'm kind of confused about skill points. According to the Wiki, you get 1 Space skill point every time you level up (for example, Commander 25 -> Commander 26). Then why is it, that every time I level up with this character, I get 2? For all the others, I only got 1. Could it be because he's a Gorn? This didn't happen with my other Klingon account...

So I'm on the mission "To Seek the Tox Uthat" but unfortunately the "Vault Door Security" won't let open even though I aligned the Icolinear Chips. I've done this 3 times already, same result each time. Do I need to go through the research area before doing this or am I missing something else here?

What if STO had difficult+rewarding PvE content?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 09:11 AM PDT

What if STO had bosses that spawned invincible adds that need to be tanked? Damage would generate threat, but not kill them. DPS ships would need to be careful about where they're spamming FAW, CSV, and sci magic. Tanks would need to grab adds and move away from the fight.

What if STO had bosses which needed to be held at a certain HP range to win, rather than just burned down? Think a Borg Diamond which auto-regens needing to stay between 30% and 40% health. DPS would need to ramp up enough to bring their health down, then scale back to keep it in range.

What if these fights actually dropped interesting loot or loot tokens? Think D.O.M.I.N.O., Starship Trait: Weapon Emitter Overdrive, Advanced Phaser Arrays. Hell, why not Advanced Phase Dual Heavy Cannons?

Would y'all enjoy this stuff, or would it break the game's monetization model if good gear was a prerequisite to access good things?

    House Mo’Kai Raiders

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 10:11 PM PDT

Been running my Sarco lately and I notice my pets, after exiting combat, will all start to self destruct one by one until they are all dead. These are the standard issues pets that come with the ship.

    Is this normal?

I've checked each one after combat and they have no debuffs or dots or anything so not sure what this is all about? Googling this question naturally revealed absolutely nothing. So, figured I'd ask here.

    Secret Mission Trait.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 06:04 PM PDT

Is there any actual utility to this besides what's mentioned in the tool-tip?

    "Marks Special Target for destruction.
    Affects foe (1 max)

    • Periodically marks a nearby foe as your Secret Target while in combat.
    • Secret Target has -25 All Damage Resistance Rating vs you.
    • When you defeat your Secret Target:
      • Creates a Section 31 Swarm for 60 second."

I mean, it sounds good, but looks sub-par. How does it actually work?
Is the -25 All Dmg Rst applicable to ALL enemy ships-from the fighter to the, say, Unimatrix vessel or Citadel?
What effect does the trait's swarm actually have?
And what real measure of time is "periodically?"-Is it 40 seconds? 60?

    Thanks

Question about Trait: Deadly Appearances from Legendary B'rel

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 07:14 PM PDT

The description on the wiki says:

Decloaking grants Shield Pen, Weapon HasteWhen Decloaking:

    • +50% Shield Penetration for Projectile Weapons for 10 sec
    • +50% Firing Cycle Haste for Energy Weapons for 10 sec
    • This also works when firing under Enhanced Battle Cloak
      (Max once per 60 seconds)

That "Max once per 60 seconds" limit - does that apply only to "when firing under enhanced battle cloak", or does it only activate once per 60 seconds regardless of how many times you decloak in that minute?

[QoL Suggestion] Unlock alt damage-type in Rep stores after crafting one

    Posted: 22 Aug 2021 11:34 AM PDT

If I craft one of the alternate energy type weapons for a Reputation project, like the TTF Phaser DHCs, why shouldn't additional TTF phaser weapons unlock in the Rep dil store?

Any insight on how to pick a Fleet to join, insofar as a Fleet's ship-building capabilities? (PS4 Console, F2P)

    Posted: 23 Aug 2021 06:08 AM PDT

What good things, in the way a fleet Operates/Manages Itself, to look out for? Also, any Potential Red-Flags in how a fleet is setup & conducts itself to look out for as well? And, to what extent are we able to tell what a Fleet is like from the Outside looking in (i.e. what the UI menu shows)?

And of course I would wanna help the fleet anyway I can, be it resource contributions or helping team run STFs, Endeavors, Events, etc

Thx for any insight you can share! 🤓
