Posted: 24 Aug 2021 06:47 AM PDT So after careful consideration, the decision was to take things from us rather than give us something to spend on? I am very frustrated by that decision. What I will do now is actually play less because rather than reroll an endeavor, I will simply not do it. This is a half baked lazy solution. [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Aug 2021 10:34 AM PDT Cryptic doesn't know how to make a videogame. They did at one point, but that's long been forgotten. This is not hyperbole: Magic Legends failed, and Star Trek Online is a perfect example of why. The extent of the mismanagement of STO is stunning. It all started after Victory is Life, when Andre Emerson was appointed executive producer. At this time, there was a major shift in how Cryptic operated - from developing a game to maximizing profits. Everything has been monetized, from featured episode replays (moved to Mudd's Market) to reputations (buyouts). That which could not be monetized was removed, such as the foundry. Prior to the Emerson era, Cryptic had scalable systems in place as a framework to develop future content. Fleet holdings, reputations, battlezones, captain specializations*. These systems are smart, since this enables future content to be developed easily - the base design work has already been done. Of particular note is that a developer recently complained that ship design space was too limited since players wanted certain things. New specializations would solve this issue for the developers. One thing that is not discussed is the inefficiency of content under Emerson. It used to be that a story arc would introduce an Alien species. Three of the ships designed for the new enemy would go into the lobi store, infinity lockbox, and promo box.** Fleet holdings would be created and used in story missions to maximize the value from environment designs. Even C-store ships would show up in missions, such as the pilot escorts. These are clever ways that Cryptic could make the most of what they had. In a confusing display of management, Emerson stopped all of these practices. What is it players enjoy doing in STO? Prior to random TFOs, the most popular queues were Infected Space, Crystalline Catastrophe, and Red Alerts. It's clear that players enjoy quick queues - which is why it's especially baffling that Emerson has decided to make time-gated TFOs with accompanying events the focal point of the game. The vast majority of new items introduced in the past two years, including the only "free" item set, required grinding a miserable TFO for over two weeks. Or, players have an option of paying up. Exploitation of players has been Emerson's MO since he started. Let's take a deep dive on how he has made this game more expensive than ever. Item sets are no longer from missions, but events or the lobi store. Ships are gone from the lobi store, and lockbox and promo ships are coming out at a breakneck pace. Legendary ships have replaced regular C-store ships, and bundles laced with junk have jacked up prices on ships to unreasonable levels. As much as I'm bashing Emerson - and don't get me wrong, he is a problem - the real issue lies with Cryptic's leadership. They've become addicted to cutting costs and increasing monetization and have forgotten who their customer is. STO has a captive audience - people who play the game because they have in the past - so they can exploit them. On a new game like Magic Legends, they have to actually attract players - customers - and give them a worthwhile product. Instead, they gave them exploitative monetization and it failed miserably. This wouldn't be the first time an MMO developer failed because of over-monetization. Jagex, the developers of Runescape, brought back a version of their game without any micro-transactions. It's currently twice as popular as the version with, despite lacking years of content and having a smaller development team. STO is at a low point of the past decade. The Dilithium Exchange crisis is the manifestation of Emerson's awful leadership. Everything in the game has been monetized, so there's no easy solution to fix the dilex. There's two ways out: demonetize, or design new systems that use dilithium. If they choose the latter, they might return to systems that work, such as fleet holdings. To me, their response to this issue will make or break STO. There has been a lack of competition in the MMO space since 2016, and the next generation of MMOs are starting to release (such as New World). Now is a great time to jump ship. There is still hope for the future. Traditional wisdom says that the failure of Magic Legends will mean a surge of support for STO so Cryptic has a game to fall back on. If they don't, I think we might see an end to not just STO, but Cryptic as a company. *For reference, the last fleet holding was 2017, battlezone and specialization were 2018, and reputation 2019. **Also a new energy weapon visual, which would also get reused for the lockbox. Don't waste Dilithium on pass tokens! Free way to skip Admiralty missions. Posted: 23 Aug 2021 01:38 PM PDT I'm sure everyone has seen by now that on August 24, Cryptic is taking away free Pass tokens from Admiralty missions and instead selling them for 2,500 dilithium. DO NOT WASTE DILITHIUM ON THIS! Instead, go to the ship vendor in Earth Spacedock, Qo'nos, New Romulus or Deep Space Nine and buy Shuttles and Runabouts for each of your factions. There are 7 in total you can buy. The Runabouts (x3) are 34,250 EC and the Shuttles (x4) are 20,550 EC (184,950 EC TOTAL). You can send these shuttles on missions by themselves to bypass missions that have terrible rewards. They only take 5 minutes to cooldown after the mission, so you can always have some available to skip. DO NOT WASTE DIL ON PASS TOKENS! [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Aug 2021 04:59 AM PDT Hello Redditors, I am not as regular or an expert as most of y'all in this sub, but I do like playing STO every now and then, and started playing occassionally in 2020. I am a little confused, especially after I recently started 2 playing with a 23rd century Starfleet and discovery Starfleet officer too. I'm still a little confused as to who instigated whom in the tholian naakuhl skirmish. Like as a 23c Fed, u see Naakuhl massacre or almost massacre a bloodline, but later on u see tholians use the tox uhtat against the Naakuhl, so who exactly started this against whom? Also, I'm still baffled by the idea of J'Ula being supported and accepted by the Federation in the 25th century after the war crimes against them in the discovery arc, but tbf Jmpok was becoming a problematic douche and that entire civil war storyline was just wtfs at times to me. Erosion; or, the greatest threat to sto. Posted: 24 Aug 2021 12:48 AM PDT First of all, the people working on sto (read, active devs and community interactors such as keal to a degree) aren't to blame, but sto has been under a slow, yet steady change that threatens to rip apart it at the seams until it ceases to exist. Systems that should seem easy and reliable to exist simply arent being updated, such as reps (name an easier way to get 100+ days of interaction from the community as easily as reps) and now the almost teasing removal of free reroll points for dil for dil, cynically I'd call it a grab to see how the community reacts to a direct erosion, practically I'd call it an ignorant solution to add it as a side grade to reroll unwanted stuff for whales and let the F2P players continue uninterrupted obviously the management we cannot see as a community, but below shareholders who actually can see what the hell is going on can't put in the time to actually care and or play the game yet guide the programmers to actually build a game and provide a good experience simply dont exist or have become grossly complacent. There should have been a direct address of issues from the commercial materials for events going on, such as the leggo scimi Dd bundle recent with the 3/4 doff mixup, there should have been address for the red alert mixup, and there should have been an address for the NWS date mixup. Any F2P mobile game of repute would have given some sort of compensation or acknowledgment much less a 11 year old PC game with a rediculously loyal fanbase. the frankly sick erosion of customer service at an Outsider/ event level is terrible and telling of a game where an endemic management doesn't care to engage with those servicing The game, leaving Keal and the people in the trenches to dry while they sit there and Dictate ineffectual lazy ways to allocate the small team in order to produce woefully inadequate content, since in an mmo setting no one person can make a significant diffrence to what people experience logging in day to day, and at this rate month to month. at this point whining at the community managers will not. And never will, change the fact that the things we expect from sto are being stripped away for no good reason. much less for the reason of driving engagement or enjoyment. if the gross incompetency continues id argue for a campaign to inform CBS of the gross mishandling of thier IP to allow a new game/mmo to flourish with the new interest with the ST brand versus cryptic who, time and time again, refuses to serve us good content reliably on practices they know work. Posted: 24 Aug 2021 09:48 AM PDT Hello fellow Admirals! Its my birthmas, and that got me wondering: Should STO/Cryptic do or give something to players on their birthday? If so, what would be good? Looking forward to any ideas! PS: If they already do something that i don't know about, should they do something more? [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Aug 2021 10:01 AM PDT I get it, can't shoot yourself in the foot, right? But this kind of treatment is why no one except the diehards is buying Zen. You can provide pay-to-skip alternatives without eliminating the chance of receiving click-to-skip tokens. Just tune the drop chances way down. You know, like you always have before. Opinions on weapon banks set up Posted: 23 Aug 2021 09:33 PM PDT As much as I love torpedoes, I'm wondering which would be better for a 4F-4A ship: 1 torpedo launcher and 7 Omni Beam Arrays (so I can always have 7 beams hit from every angle with OL and FaW), or 8 Omni Beam Arrays? Also, I'm considering doing a mix of Disruptors and Phasers for multiple dbuffs (and I've got the AntiProton OBA from story missions). Is that a good idea or should I stick with one type?
