Ten Forward Weekly 09.06.2021: Lead Character Artist Ian Castaneda

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 09:04 PM PDT

    Links: Twitch, Facebook [0:59]

Theme: Lead Character Artist Ian Castaneda

Guest: Lead Character Artist Ian Castaneda

Things happened (are still happening, really). Read life took precedence. I'll try to beat the poisonous feeling of "too late, why bother" and would post the two missing TFWs too. Later.

    • Whenever Cryptic does faction-specific clothes, they try they best, within time constraints, to make sure that it could be matched with other clothing available to the faction.
    • They try to make character assets reusable whenever possible.
    • Usually character artists receive most of the design already worked out, either in form of references, or in form of concept art, although they do have some leeway in finishing the design.
    • A huge help for the artists is that usually characters don't come with their special unique costumes and creating the new head and then properly setting sliders on generic body is enough.
    • For J'Ula they wanted her to use general DIS style, but still have a distinct look.
    • Al Rivera is the one who ultimately decides who to make costume available for, even if answer would be obvious.
    • Gorn are usual problem-creators for the attempts to make clothes fit all. In particular, all hats gorn use are technically different from regular versions, even Lincoln's top hats are separate entities.
    • Originally space barbie, for klingons in particular, was specifically restricted so not to potentially aggravate CBS.
    • Original programmers hadn't thought about addition of colours to palettes.
    • Cryptic is unwilling to unrestrict some of the sliders just because they're afraid of our creativity.
    • Currently, they usually create things with assumption that it'll end up in player's hands.
    • Cryptic are working on more character likenesses right now - so apparently more canon new characters are coming.
    • Non-klingon dreadlocks, among other new hairstyles, are in works right now.
    • Broken capes were Cryptic for as long as they existed, starting from City of Heroes.
      • Among other reasons is that capes became orphaned piece of code pretty early.
      • Right now capes are responsibility of the same people who do things like critter AI, and it's predictable which gets priority.
    • Working on a tzenkethi was fun for character artists because of novelty of the skeleton required, as opposed to usual humanoids Star Trek features.
    • They have plans to make irregular skins (body ones, as opposed to character skins) look better and more seamless, but that's relatively low on priorities list because of more visible stuff.
    • New body models are close to completion.

And now that I squeezed it into my schedule I'm going to crash. No patrolling of comments until much later.

    QoL: Better Episode Information

Going back though the original episodes and picking up Accolades and Unique items. It would be very helpful if in the Episode tab if you could provide detailed information about accolades and unique items that can be obtained and if you have them in inventory. See image for Example.

    Zen sale

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 07:31 AM PDT

Does anyone think there will be a zen sale to go along with the mudds package? Sometimes they do it but I know there are those here who keep track of sales and what they correspond with. Also speaking of sales don't buy the mudds thing right off either, wait and see if a zen sale comes up in an hour after.

New player about 20 days in. Advice on marks, etc

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 04:30 AM PDT

    Hi there!
During my 5th or so playthrough of TNG, I kept internet searching things I thought were cool & kept hearing about STO. With post pandemic free time, and FTP on PS4, I finally took the plunge.

I created 3 characters which are receiving the Delta Recruit bonuses. Romulan, Federation, and then KDF. Although the Romulan was made first, it's in the teens, but the other two are at lvl 26.

I believe I've gotten my bearings. I wish I could access shield/science ships on Romulan/KDF, but such as it is. Romulan is Tactical, Fed is Engineer and KDF is Science. Keeping it interesting lol.

I am trying to keep up with duty officers on all 3, watching for rare traits, and I will attempt to spread R&D between the 3. I purchased account bank slots.
I'm not sure what other things are important to note, but.

What I can't know is, faction rewards, marks.. things like that.
I've been doing the Tholian Trouble dailies, but I don't know which marks I should be choosing..
Based on research into space perks, I have mostly done Omega marks, followed by Delta.
I lean towards a defensive playstyle, so the regen and shield perks catch my interest.
I have noted the diminishing returns from improved/advanced perks, so I'm taking at least the first perk in most disciplines.

One last key thing.. If I can get a very rare/purple with stat focuses I like, it seems it might be worth using upgrade kits to carry them forward as I level, vs buying new gear every promotion. I've also had success collecting gear from Borg themed patrols of the Ker'rat system.

    Have I missed anything?
It's my first MMO in several years, but I think it's going well so far.
Also,, what can I expect after the 17th this month? Will the Delta Recruit perks go away? Should I be sure to do anything before that occurs? Thanks!

    Help for my d'deridex (d'kellra)

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 09:41 AM PDT

Hello, i'm a returning player that didn't Play that much in the past, but now I am committed. My problem is that I love the d'deridex and refuse to main any other ship. I decided to spend my hard earned money to buy the d'kellra, since from what I could gather is the best d'deridex-skinned ship around. I tried to follow some kind of guide on what to aim for in terms of build but It's old stuff and before farming for reputation or spending more money, I'd love to have some up to date guideline on what to get in terms of items, traits, crew, traits etc... For now I'm an engineer with intelligence primary and pilot secondary (for the turn rate), and managed to get all beam array weapons. If anyone well versed in ship building could give some tips it would be wonderful.

A list of ground abilities that would constitute war crimes

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 07:11 PM PDT

Hello, all you people looking to avoid being tried and hanged as war criminals and those of you scrambling to find paper to write down these ideas to make your perfect kit module setup, ensuring your name goes down in history after your eventual death.

This is an idea I've kicked around for a while and joked about constantly with my friends - how many abilities in STO would consistute as war crimes when put up against regular 'humane' standards. (I.E. Radiation/chemical warfare, bio-weapons, mind control/torture, etc.)

    Starting with radiation damage:

    Weapons

    (1) Crystal Radiation Projector

    (2) Counter-Command Bio-Molecular Rifle(s) (Also Bio-Molecular Phaser and Disruptor weapons from the rep store/boxes)

    (3) Terran Task Force High Density Rifle(s) (Also Withering Disruptor weapons from the rep store/boxes)

    (4) Thoron Infused Polaron Weapons

    Kit Modules

    (1) (Tac) Bio-Molecular Photon Grenade

    (2) (Sci) Hypertonic Radiation

    (3) (Sci) Nanite Sonic Pulse

    (4) (Sci) Neutronic Radiation

    (5) (Tac) Photonic Overcharge

    (6) (Sci) Photonic Overload

    (7) (Uni) Protomatter Munition Deployment

    (8) (Uni) Solar Gateway

    (9) (Uni) Stasis Drone

    Set Bonus Abilities

    (1) Unstable Bio-Molecular Personal Shield

    Personal Traits

    (1) Radiant Detonation Module

    Up next is toxic damage:

    Weapons

    (1) Na'kuhl Temporal Operative Minigun

    Kit Modules

    (1) (Tac) Active Immunity Grenade

    (2) (Eng) Active Immunity Mine Field

    (3) (Sci) Active Immunity Overload

    (4) (Uni) Biotoxin Injection

    (5) (Tac) Corrosive Grenade

    (6) (Uni) Crawler Swarm

    (7) (Uni) Toxin Dart Launcher

    Set Bonus Abilities

    (1) Enhanced Crawler Mine

    Personal Traits

    (1) Bite (This could absolutely be defended by saying it was self defense and not intentionally poisoning someone to watch them perish slowly.)

    Combat Pets/Devices

    (1) Dilithium, Eisilum, and Polytrinic Acid Hortas

Next, it's arguable that some Psionic traits could be considered cruel and unusual. These are really up for debate, and could probably be appealed for leniency in your trial. Maybe you'll just get life imprisonment depending on which faction eventually captures you.

    Personal Traits

    (1) Rapture

    (2) Mind Drain

Control is another one of those that could be contentious, as it's not as heinous as killing someone with radiation or melting their brain with psionics. However, depending on who has captured you and who is trying you it could be a very serious accusation that you made their crews turn on each other against their will. Really, the 'War Crime'-ness from these comes from what you use your control over these people to do.

    Kit Modules

    (1) (Uni) Agonizer Brain Scramble

    (2) (Uni) Incite Chaos

    (3) (Sci) Soothing Pheromones

    Personal Traits

    (1) Seduce

Next, we have two that I have decided to just put under 'other', just for the concept/description of the ability alone.

    Kit Modules

    (1) (Uni) Assimilate

    (2) (Uni) Bio-Essence Transfer

    (3) (Uni) Weaponized Dark Matter

I have undoubtedly missed some while putting this together, so if you think of any that might qualify for a quick trip to life imprisonment or the headsman, do post them in the comments.

    Finding a Fleet?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 05:28 AM PDT

I have been playing for years and used to be in a fleet but stopped, and now no one I know plays :( Any advice for an old Admiral to find herself a new Fleet? Ideally one that'll let me put in the work to earn a Fleet Support Cruiser ;)

Personally I want a more casual fleet since I'm a very casual player, but just in general some advice would be nice - do ya'll know of a forum or somewhere people post LFG?

EDIT: Yes, sorry, I meant on PC - when I started console wasn't a thing and I could still play on my Mac lol

We have T-6X coupons to upgrade ships; what about Account Unlock tokens to make your lobi or lockbox ships or gear account unlocks?

Don't know if anybody ever brought the idea up.
