All J'Ula's story really needs is a greater emphasis on her accepting that her brother was wrong.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:21 AM PDT

Obviously there's been a ton of discussion about J'Ula and everyone's reaction to the conclusion of her story. Since it's a hot topic right now, I'll throw my 2 cents in as well. Warning: very long. TL;DR at the end.

    Part 1: J'Ula is not a friend to non-Klingons

When we first meet J'Ula (assuming a non-KDF, non-DSC character), she is basically just gender-bent T'Kuvma flung into the future. Her first order of business after seeing this new galaxy is to throw a colossal temper tantrum and start a civil war. Why, you ask? Because she's angry that her people, after literal centuries of galactic events, no longer rigidly follow her long-dead brother's extremely supremacist, isolationist, warmongering, "ham-fisted-allegory-for-MAGA" ideology.

Does she take the time to understand why her people are allies of the Federation and Romulans? Does she read a history book? If she did, it doesn't show, but maybe that made sense at the time - she was a nationalist fanatic, after all. But later on we are shown that she is supposedly thoughtful and intelligent. So how could she not look at the history of the quadrant and realize that without aid from someone, the Klingon Empire would have been erased half a dozen times over? The Romulans, the Dominion, the Undine, the Borg, the Hur'Q, and the Iconians all posed an existential threat to the Klingon Empire which absolutely required joining forces with the Federation to defeat.

Yet all evidence to the contrary, she still decides that, no, the Federation is ruining the Klingon Empire, and it's time to go full armed-insurrection on the High Council. She is quite clear that her platform is all about "restoring Klingon-ness" and the total rejection of non-Klingon influences within the Empire. She then gathers a (frankly absurd) number of allies among present-timeline Klingons who somehow buy into her demagoguery, fills her "super secret Mo'kai fleet from Exegol somewhere" with these people, and launches her crusade.

When she is finally betrayed and forced to work with the player... she is still surrounded by these people. There is no indication that the crew who remained loyal to her are somehow any different from any of the other Klingon supremacists that rallied to her banner in the beginning.

Part 2: J'Ula is responsible for the fallout of the civil war

I won't get into the various issues of how dishonorably she fought (using viruses to kill crews of ships that were already disabled, etc) as there is ample evidence that "real" Klingons don't actually care about that outside of legends and opera.

However... she is still at fault for the atrocities committed by Aakar and his cronies. She is the captain of her flagship and the leader of all the Mo'kai forces. Her fleet, her ship, and her bridge are populated by people she chose, whose loyalty was based on following the tenets of T'Kuvma's infantile belief system. It is her responsibility to lead these men and women and to ensure that they follow her orders. If she had any inclination that Aakar was going to betray her and fire on an undesignated target, she should have shot him dead on the spot (and he definitely telegraphed his insubordination several times).

Moreover, the first few missions against her are tremendous failures on her part. Her forces are defeated at little cost to the Federation or its allies, and a great cost to House Mo'kai. Aakar even mentions that this is part of his problem with her. And yet she never seems to appreciate the reality that her overall plan to isolate the Klingon Empire and secure its borders against everyone else is just... not feasible. There's no way the Klingon Empire could stand against the united front of the Alliance if it chose to invade. And even if the Alliance respected Klingon sovereignty... it would only last until the next galaxy-ending threat approached and we'd be right back where we were with the Romulans, Dominion, Undine, Borg, Iconians, etc.).

This... never really changes over the course of the missions. Sure, she gets some superweapons and berserk Elachi, but those really don't tip the scales against the literal pan-galactic Alliance which held back the Iconians and Hur'Q. So, by the time she and the player are forced to work together, she needs us a lot more than we need her. Honestly, J'mpok has much the same problem as J'Ula at this point - he cannot win against the Alliance. Even if J'Ula is defeated, it's just not believable that J'mpok would fare any better.

Part 3: J'Ula must see the error of her ways

Ultimately, it's inconceivable that J'Ula doesn't wake up to the fact that her plan was both wildly unnecessary and doomed to fail. Unless she is monumentally stupid or willfully, fanatically blind, she must see that not only did she waste thousands upon thousands of Klingon lives fighting a war she was never going to win, she only survived her crusade because of the participation and influence of a "non-Klingon" (the only exception being if you played this as a KDF character). In the eyes of her followers and T'Kuvma's ideology, she is a hypocrite at best, or an outright traitor at worst.

And yet, the game never seems to acknowledge this. We get a fair amount of regret from J'Ula about the cost of the war, sure, but she never comes right out and admits that not only was her plan wrong, but her beliefs were misguided as well. (I may not have a perfect memory of every mission - if she did mention this, it certainly wasn't a consistent theme and did not make a lasting impression on me). In the end, this leaves a sour taste; the feeling that J'Ula just bounced from event to event, doing whatever was most advantageous for herself, never holding to any particular principles, and then gaslighting the player by acting that that wasn't what she was about.

    TL;DR / Conclusion: I don't want J'Ula's blood, just her gratitude

I'm not one to just rail about how she needs to die or whatever. Had she sacrificed herself at the end of the story, I would have been okay with it, but her death is not what solves my issues with the story. I'm fine with J'Ula having a redemption arc.

All I want is for J'Ula to admit she was wrong - not just wrong about the war, her plan, or the consequences - but wrong about the beliefs that started it in the first place. I want J'Ula to show some gratitude to the wider galaxy that helped keep the Klingons going in the centuries she missed. Let her verbalize (openly and often) her rejection of her brother's extremism. Show me her "Sokath, his eyes uncovered" moment, and make it a recurring theme in her player interactions.

Without this, I feel stupid for helping her. The game made me feel like a dupe, aiding someone who was an unrepentant enemy of the very concept of mutual assistance, without once giving me the opportunity to seriously question that person's motives. At least Species 8472, the Neural Parasites, and the Changelings tried to deceive me into working against my interests.

Worf And Friends React To The Civil War Storyline In Their Own Words

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:15 PM PDT

So, we need to look at this story from a Klingon's perspective? Fine, ask and you shall receive. Is there anyone who has "remained Klingon" throughout all the years more than Worf, son of Mogh?

So this all started 160 years earlier, when Lrell held the Klingon Empire hostage by threatening to commit an act of genocide unless everyone agreed with her and accepted her rule.

    • "Cowards take hostages. Klingons do not." (Worf , TNG "Heart of Glory")
    • "We cannot regain honor by acting dishonorably." (Worf TNG, "Redemption")

Fast forward to the 25th Century, a time where the Federation and Klingon Empire are at possibly their most stable point in their alliance (thanks to you players). When an outdated Klingon and her minions show up and want to continue their bloody war with the UFP.

    • "You fool! Did it not occur to you that the war would be over by now?"
(K'TEMOC [on viewscreen]: I have no proof of that.)
"Trust your eyes. Or is your brain still stuck in its long slumber?" (Worf TNG, "The Emissary")

So after several episodes and patrols showcasing Jula's hate for Starfleet, ruthlessness, and unwillingness to compromise (which is totally fine for a Klingon) the writers suddenly paint Jula as indecisive, unwilling to kill civilians loyal to the UFP/KDF alliance -- AND that Aakar is the truly ruthless Klingon. If so, why should any Klingon feel sorry for one who has lost command of his/her forces?

    • "It's my understanding that one of the duties of the First Officer on a Klingon ship is to assassinate the Captain."
    • "Yes, sir. When and if the Captain becomes weak and unable to perform, it is expected that his honorable retirement should be assisted by his First. The Second Officer would assassinate you for the same reasons." (Riker and Worf, TNG "A Matter of Honor")

Moving ahead, we land on Boreth and, instead of creating a new version of the Klingon messiah, we help grow a clone of a 23rd century politician whose reign did not even last into TMP-era Star Trek. Also, her soul was in Gre'thor, regardless of the reasonings, she was among the dishonored dead. This is the historical figure who will bring unity to all Klingons?

    • "Motives? Who cares for motives? Humans perhaps." (Ambassador Kell, TNG "The Mind's Eye")
    • "They grew you in a test tube, like some kind of fungus – then programmed you like a MACHINE!" (Worf, TNG "Rightful Heir")

So as the arc draws to a close, Martok continues to wield the Sword of Kahless. Worf is torchbearer of the Empire as the two worked to unite all houses in the fight against the Hur'q. Martok used that same sword (along with the player) to stop an army of Hur'q in hand-to-hand combat.

Now however, Martok -- who once had his eye ripped out and kept fighting Jem'hadar, who was stabbed in the shoulder and pulled out the blade to kill Torg -- is NOT fatally shot in his armor but the writers think this is enough to cause him to hand over his sword to said clone-Lrell and beam (run) away.

    • "The Sword will unite us, if it's held by a true Klingon. Not a politician like Gowron or some toothless figurehead like the Emperor. The Sword must rest in the hands of someone who has been hardened by battle, pure of heart, who understands loyalty and honor. A warrior like Kang and Koloth!"
      "Someone like you?"
"The Empire could do far worse." (Kor and Worf, DS9 "The Sword of Kahless")

Finally, the victorious ladies play hot potato with the Sword of Kahless, before deciding amongst themselves that a clone should now have complete rule of the Empire. Also, Worf should no longer hold his title as torchbearer and it should be handed to Jula, who started the Civil War in the first place.

    • (GOWRON: What are you saying? That I should just hand over the Empire?)
"No, that would be unwise as well. You were right about one thing, Koroth. Our people are becoming decadent and corrupt. They need moral leadership. Kahless can be that leader, as Emperor. The political power will remain with the High Council. Kahless would be a figurehead, but he will have the ability to rally the people, to lead by example, to guide them in spiritual matters."
    • (KOROTH: The title is meaningless without the power to back it up.)
"Real power comes from within the heart. You would have the power to mold the Klingon heart. You could return them to honorable ways according to the original teachings of Kahless which are within you. It would be a great challenge, if you have the courage to accept it." (Worf, TNG "Rightful Heir")

So, looking at this conclusion from a Klingon perspective and 30+ years of experience from the Son of Mogh, why exactly would this outcome reunite the great houses? Especially when the new Chancellor was created specifically to take power and Jula technically failed to seize the Empire.

    • "Kahless said, 'Great men do not seek power, they have power thrust upon them'."
(Worf puts the cloak on Martok.)
"Hail, Martok! Leader of the Empire! Leader of destiny." (Worf, DS9 "Tacking Into The Wind")

    Dear Cryptic

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:34 PM PDT

    Re. Remain Klingon

I realise you're trying to make your repeatable content more interesting and challenging but you've overlooked the fact that the average STO player is apparently too thick to follow a big neon yellow arrow telling them where they should go.

I don't know if its possible but maybe design it so that if a player fails the objective, say, three times, it just doesn't pick that player again.

    Many thanks 😞

Edit: Will add, to clarify, not blaming the devs here.

    Can I please be court-martialed?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 03:53 PM PDT

Since we can't get to be captains for more than a moment can't we get court-martialed and have our rank reduced to Captain again?

Since we can't have the rank Captain in-game due to its so deeply written in the code if I understand it correctly. Why not create a new rank of Captain placed after Fleet Admiral?? I don't know if it's even possible but running around doing missions as an admiral makes no since specially since we are thousands of admirals flying amongst the stars now.

By giving us the rank of Captain the game would make more sense to me at least and Admiralty could be renamed to Fleetcaptain something something, Fleetcaptain was a rank in TOS.

    Multiple R&D School Doffs?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:13 AM PDT

Is it possible to run multiple same R&D crafting Doffs at the same time? I just acquired a second Beam Weapon specialist for Omni directional crafting but I cannot insert them when attempting to start the R&D build.

    Thanks.

Al Rivera shares his thoughts on J'Ula. How would you like to respond?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:35 PM PDT

Today Al Rivera said the following:

In many ways, I'm very happy J'Ula stirs up such strong emotions. Whether you like her or not is good. But to judge her as being evil or bad or irredeemable is to apply human morality, which kinda misses the point. You must Judge her only by what it means to be Klingon.

    Worst C-store ships: Federation Edition

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:05 PM PDT

We've all seen the many posts over the years where new players ask us veterans what the best way to spend their $30 is. That got me thinking though...what are the worst T6 c-store ships? What are your top 5 bad ships? Do you have a favorite bad ship? Here are a few of my picks for "worst" among the c-store...

Worst Ship Overall: Europa Heavy Battlecruiser I LOVE this ship...I do. A Fleet Nimitz is my flagship and I think it looks just great...but it's bad. It's the only T6 cruiser with less than 3 tactical consoles, it handles poorly...it just doesn't fit what we all think a Battlecruiser should be (I.e. tactical focused cruisers)

Ship that didn't age well: Resolute Advanced Heavy Cruiser No surprise here... the seating is just too rigid on this ship, leaving it over-invested in Engineeeing. If the ensign seat had been universal instead, it would be passable.

Pretty ship, not so great: Valiant Tactical Escort Yup, Defiant is a bad ship! It has precious little Engineering seating, so if you run A2B, you give up Emergency Power to Weapons II (it already can't run EPtW3)

Could we *PLEASE* get an autofire option for our torpedoes the same as the other weapons? Having to continuously fire them manually (especially if you're in a torpedo boat) can really get annoying.

PS, can anyone tag kael on this - I know he doesn't care but may as well bring it up....again...

Romulan Republic Plasma Weapons Canon Inquiry?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:38 PM PDT

Is there a canon explanation as to why the Romulan Republic use Plasma weapons instead of the familiar Disruptor weapons? All throughout Star Trek lore, the Romulan Star Empire have used Disruptor weapon technology, alongside the Klingon Empire.

I've also learned that other civilizations far older than the Federation have used Plasma weaponry, such as the Turei, the Olt orbital defense satellites, and even the Federation themselves used Plasma cannons before they adopted Phaser technology. (I know that "Romulan Plasma" has the additional proc of Disruptor damage, but the base damage type is still Plasma.)

I'm just wondering if there is an in-game canon explanation as to why the Romulan Republic either "reverted to," or just decided to ditch Disruptors altogether and instead use Plasma weapons tech.

(QOL) Remain Klingon TFO: Targ and Kristak need better visual indicators

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:02 PM PDT

Just in case any devs are watching. On the occasions when I get my beepy green targeting reticle, I often have a hard time finding where I'm supposed to take it to. The Targ and Kristak are kind of visually buried in the mess of enemy ships everywhere. It'd be nice if it displayed a big fat arrow when you get the reticle telling you where to take it to.

Where is the Tholian Captain on Nukara?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:46 PM PDT

I'm just trying to complete the Universal Endeavor. The Tholian Project Leader is not a Captain.

Edit: I've successfully completed the Transdimensional Tactics Advanced TFO twice. I've looted the dead Project Leader twice, but the Endeavor stands uncompleted.

Here's the enemy list for the TFO; https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Mission:_Transdimensional_Tactics#Enemies. Tholian Captain is not on it.

2nd Edit: I just successfully completed the Transdimensional Tactics Advanced TFO a third time. This time I got the Endeavor completed, no problem. I have no idea what I did differently. Thanks to everyone for your help.
