Ten Forward Weekly 05.05.2021: Tholian Trouble

    Posted: 05 May 2021 08:54 PM PDT

    Links: Twitch, Facebook

    Topic: Tholian Trouble

Guests: senior content designer Jesse Heinig and systems designer Jonathan Herlache

Decided to finally register on Twitch and join the chat; in response to that, chat failed to load. Such is my life.

    • Klingon tutorial bridge was made into regular bridge and is the new default.
      • It's coming soon, along with new story update.
    • Azure nebula rework:
      • First thing Jesse did was to make trapped ships' spawns no longer truly random, as it was before, and with each "small" ship rescued you receive increased chance of getting high-value target.
      • Another was contacts that tell you about tholians' abilities.
    • They thought about what would reward be. Options explored were: webs, tetryon, hatred for time travel, tholian's rivalries.
    • Console's supposed to synergise with other tholian stuff.
    • Reasons for implementation of new things could be anything, from gameplay need to a random want to implement specific desire.
    • Crystal Prisms were confirmed to being inspired by Prism towers from C&C Red Alert 2.
    • For console, initial inspiration was a visual they wanted to get, and they built abilities around it.
    • Some talk about some things from shows and how it translates into the game, how it could bring something new, but also how new shiny thing could be something that was already done several times.
    • The big problem with temporal recruit was because they had concerns that TOS episodes aged poorly, both in art and it mechanics, and wanted to rework them before unleashing players unto it.
    • The Vault ensnared rework:
      • Several streamlining efforts, f.e. in first part you can speed things up by completing the task before time limit, while before there was a hard time limit.
      • Tholian Vault Weavers now travel in packs and move in such pattern, so that players would get the feeling of more target-rich environment, while getting the same thing.
      • Warning contact for the nebula.
      • Dreadnought fight was moved to the nebula to present relatively new experience of totally shieldless fight.
    • One of things they do during the reworks is improve navigation, by adding markers on both map and screen, as they felt that lot of earlier content is problematic to navigate around.
    • Jonathan would like to work on and improve the melee system, especially since in old Star Treks it was fairly common.
    • The problem with storage of character data is not about space itself, that part is relatively minor, but rather about tracking all the character data, and this is when system becomes fragile.
    • Jesse would like to make more mystery episodes. Also, only half-jokingly, he mentioned lack of musical episodes.
      • Something else he wants to get done is to have Borg ground environments redone, but that would be huge team-wide effort.

Ever wondered how much EC you can make from Endeavor? Well, here's my 30-day result: 481k per day.

Which purchased ship(s) has been a disappointment to you? and vice versa

    Posted: 05 May 2021 09:33 PM PDT

A few years ago when I saved up a huge chunk of EC to buy a Vonph, I was really disappointed. For whatever reason, I never really had much fun in that ship. Could be due to the fact it doesn't turn or stop and the ship being "tall" made it feel really strange to pilot.

A few others, the Andromeda cruiser, Yamato Cruiser - on paper, the yamato looked fun, but was disappointed.

ships that aren't good but I do still love - Guardian Cruiser, I still have it and fly it even though apart from its looks, there's nothing else going for it. I will continue to love that ship for the rest of my days. That and the Odyssey will continue to be one of the best designed star fleet ships to date.

Ships that I feel were of great value:

    1. Vengeance - but of course, what else could it be. Probably the best 300 mil I've ever spent in the history of me playing this game. I'd love it more if it had a better turning rate and sleeker/prettier design, but not really a complaint
    2. Legendary NX - I don't know if there's a similar non legend version with the same layout. So can't say for value, but I'm certainly glad this ship was in the bundle. Currently is one of my go to ship with the personal best DPS. I don't like the ship design but everything else, it's about as perfect as it comes.
    3. Dhailkhina - Almost the same as the NX except, it got a hangar bay but taken away the temporal seating. Holder if my personal second best DPS. If there's ever a temporal variant of this ship, i'd be all over it.

    Your turn.

    STO crashes my PC

    Posted: 06 May 2021 04:38 AM PDT

After downgrading my GPU to a R9 290X I have the following problem: STO crashes consistenly after maximum 5-10 minutes. I have a R7 1700, 16 GB DDR4 (4266 @ 2133), a B550M-TUF (2006 BIOS) and the mentioned 290X, using a Morpheus aftermarket cooler and two Corsair ML120 fans, which keeps it around 60°.

Now the weird part comes, I can play BF4 in 4K and Vermintide 2 in 1080p high settings for hours without a problem. But Star Trek will crash and the "DRAM" LED on the mainboard turns on. Is it time to quit Star Trek?

    Phoenix Prize Pack question

    Posted: 06 May 2021 07:17 AM PDT

So, if you receive a prize pack voucher over a certain rarity is it treated as an account unlock? I started a Delta Recruit last weekend, and I noticed in the dilithium store that some things are reclaimable on this character that I unlocked on others. The Prolonged Engagement Dynamo console, the phaser and torpoedo, as well as the Bajor Warp and Singularity cores are all reclaimable. Things that were rare or below, like the Zefram Cochrane shotgun, and several doff and admiratlty ships aren't.

    Posted: 06 May 2021 12:41 AM PDT

So I've been working on a plasma/sci torp build and was wondering, instead of getting locators to boost torp damage, I got locators to boost plasma...will this boost the damage on the plasma torps or did I just waste fleet credits and dil? 😅

Bug: Graphic issues since patch 4th May on PC - black textures in missions for some seconds

    Posted: 05 May 2021 11:29 PM PDT

So I was doing Assault on Terok Nor about 12h ago and the first time ever, and I play for more than 3 years, I had very strange graphic ingame engine issues. Midgame, not able to replicate, the graphic went all black; this happened twice during the TFO. Its not like the display goes black, more like the textures. Check my screenshot.

I asked in the usual discord places and indeed I am not the only one encountering this.
The guy who confirmed this issue did "blood of ancients".

I updated my Nvidia drivers recently, like yesterday but the other guy confirming didnt update his drivers for some time. He also has a Nvidia card.

Anyone else got this issue since Tuesday?

    Defeating the Son'a Dreadnought-Brushfire

    Posted: 05 May 2021 04:54 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I've been playing this game for 6 years now, and I've encountered every enemy in it (even the Crystalline Entity and Salt Vampires). The one I can't crack is a single ship, the Son'a Dreadnought in "Brushfire". I've tried going at it with every class, I've tried firing everything I had at it, I've tried not firing anything at it, and I've tried debuffing it with subnucleonic beam. I can't figure out the tactics for destroying the thing, and I avoid the mission because it takes a good 15 to 20 minutes the destroy the darn thing.

Has anyone cracked the strategy to use against this thing? It's not a build problem (I think), my advanced characters can't defeat it on basic difficulty.

EDIT: Is there a better strategy than what's on the wiki? I can't control my allies, so when it deploys its hull-healing solar fan, they still fire at it and undo the damage I deal. The last time I played with that strategy, I stopped firing as soon as the fans deployed. The dreadnought was sitting at 51%. Even without my firing or my pets firing, my allies (Kurn, etc) filled that sucker up to 72%.

    Annorax vs Krenim Science Vessel

    Posted: 05 May 2021 07:58 PM PDT

I currently fly the Krenim Sci Vessel and was wondering if the Annorax is a good upgrade? It would take up a majority of my EC funds so I'm hesitant to go through with it

    Disappointed in Lafayette Recon Destroyer

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:16 PM PDT

I acquired the Titan Science Destroyer, and I also have the Alita Strike Wing Escort and the Valiant Tactical Escort. All three of these ships seem to perform much better than the Lafayette in combat, with the same consoles and weapons.

When I look at the wiki, the Lafayette does have lower hull stats than all three of those ships. How can this ship be a "mid point between an escort and cruiser" when it's hull stats are well below both escorts and cruisers?
