Random Idea: Borg Rebalance as a Meta-Breaker

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 05:41 AM PST

Or, "How could the Borg be made scary again?"

They're STO's oldest main villains and perhaps Trek's single most iconic villain (thanks to the Klingons' frenemy status). Yet in STO they are a simple punching bag. It wasn't always so; back in prehistory defeating the Borg in STFs required coordination and/or top of the line setups. For most players, soloing a Borg Cube was a hard-fought affair.

More than any new villain, I'd love to see the Borg rebalanced and put centre-stage again. "Measure of Morality" did a great job making them scary again, and more of that would be welcome.

I had a brief and probably stupid thought that Borg Adaptation could be used to address the current runaway DPS meta - just as the Tzenkethi were designed to counter the old Grav Well / FAW meta. Perhaps something like the "Honoured Dead" mechanism where rapid damage caused the Borg to gain exponential resistances, making quick kills impossible.

I'm sure some players would find workarounds, just as minelayers used to be able to instakill Borg Gateways even while their regeneration was still active. But it would in some measure bring back the old apprehension of "we are engaging the Borg".

    Serious ships names versus non-serious?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 05:38 AM PST

What's your preference? Do you stick with lore-friendly names like U.S.S. Midway or I.K.S. Qorwagh, or do you fly with the U.S.S. Lollipop (it's a good ship) or the I.K.S. Dirty Targ? Or do you mix it up?

Personally, I do both. Most of my ships have serious names (U.S.S. Celestial, Barracuda, Delta Pavonis), while a few do not (I.K.S. Tohru, Bowsette, Catayashi Meow.)

Are your ships the pride of the fleet? Or the jokers?

There have been several posts recently about how to complete Tour the Galaxy, and what equipment you need. How much the ship traits matter and such. So I ran an experiment to test what I thought was the bare minimum.

Using a T1 NX replica, character with Sector space speed skill, Gamma rep warp core and MACO impulse engine upgraded to XV, I was able to complete Tour the Galaxy with about 2 seconds to spare. Your mileage may vary.

Helpful suggestions for new weapons and abilities /s

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 10:06 AM PST

I figure it must be difficult coming up with a constant stream of new weapons and abilities. Abilities like Summon Neutronic Eddies and weapons like the Experimental Repulsor Blaster show Cryptic hasn't lost their touch. Still, new ideas can't hurt. Here's some of mine!

Trans Radial Optical Light Lensing: Shrouds enemy ship(s) in permanent, undetectable cloak. Can't hit what you can't find!

Assimilated Superconductive Shield Hardening Auxiliary Transformer: Provides enemy ship(s) with unpenetrable, perfect shields. In the words of the classical lyricist M.C. Hammer, "can't touch this".

Forced Unilateral Cogenerate Kenetic Yield Osmic Utilizer: Flings enemy ship(s) completely off the map, leaving them unreachable. When teammates ask why? Because Forced Unilateral Cogenerate Kenetic Yield Osmic Utilizer, that's why!

That's all I have for now. Feel free to help out with your own suggestions!

    :)

Catfish sandwiches and other things that have STO gameplay "ruined the moment"

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:56 PM PST

SHARE YOUR FAVORITE PAST OR PRESENT RUINED GAMEPLAY MOMENT

What follows happened to me the other week during the recruitment event. Just picture an 8' tall Gorn fighting for the future of the Alliance in an ancient past...

Meanwhile, 200,000 years ago on the planet of Iconia...

GORN: Protect the Iconian leadership! We have to get them to the portal. It's our only chance to make peace in the future!

BOFF: SIR! I found this gear [loot] on one of the enemy invaders. It could be of use to us.

    GORN: What it is?

BOFF: It's a catfish sandwich, sir.

    [awkward pause]

GORN: Everyone hold your positions. [starts eating sandwich]

M'LIREN (ICONIAN LEADER): We must depart now, before our people perish!

GORN: [chewing] Mmm... M'Liren -- do you guys have tartar sauce? What with infinite knowledge?

    M'LIREN: I'm sorry, what?

GORN: [chewing] OMG -- this is really good. [nudging dead NPC enemies with foot] Lieutenant -- check the enemy corpses. See if any more of them had catfish sandwiches.

BOFF: Aye, sir. [moment later] Two of the invaders were carrying Yamok sauce!

SELA: Ya know, I COULD finish this as I planned...

GORN: [burp] 'scuse me. No, Sela, stick to the plan. [chewing] Here -- try this -- it'll take your mind off genocidal revenge. OMG -- best catfish sandwich EVAR!

OTHER BOFF: Sir, the Alliance is doomed if we don't complete this mission...

GORN: [chewing] Time travel, commander -- the Alliance will never know that we stopped for a bite to eat...

Having two problems after this week's patch

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 05:38 AM PST

    1. Hangar pets cannot be manually launched when set to auto-launch. I can now only turn off the auto-launch or wait until entering combat, then the pets will start launching.
    2. I cannot de-select an object or a player by clicking elsewhere. Now the only way I can lose focus on anything is target an enemy and kill it.

Are these bugs or intended? Is there any workaround to make things like before? Thanks.

Which mission arc needs a rework the most?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:19 AM PST

Since we have seen that Cryptic actually can rework things well sometimes with the Year of the Klingon, what should be up next?

Devs: PlayStation / Xbox - Can we have an improved graphics option?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:13 AM PST

Now we have the next gen consoles, can we please have an option added to up the graphics in the game?

I understand the Xbox one and PS4 struggled to handle some aspects of the game, but we know the next gen consoles won't have those setbacks.

I know you're not likely to rework the entire game for these consoles, but could we be given a toggle on next gen to turn on better settings to utilise the hardware and bring it closer to our PC counterparts?

Just my thoughts having already benefited from STO on the PS5 and the improvement it has had on the game.

So I found out that I kinda been trolling myself...

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 01:59 PM PST

So I found out that I kinda been trolling myself...

While I was leveling up my second Klingon recruit and played through the Borg arc, I noticed that my Kit module, Bio-Essence Transfer activated my Medical Vanguard on the borg, which meant I gave them a perfect shield (no bleedthrough), shield regeneration, and shield resistance because of it.

The Bio-Essence Transfer kit module gets activated on all types of enemies, scorpions on Nimbus as another example.

    Medical Vanguard activates on enemies.

Today I finally figured out why I have been seeing enemies being randomly healed.

It would turn out that the culprit is the personal ground trait To Absent Friends that get activated on the enemies affected by my kit module... Bio-Essence Transfer.

This combination also seems to affect all types of enemies.

To Absent Friends, personal ground trait heals the enemy.

So what is the lesson to be learned? Bio-Essence Transfer kit module thinks that your targetted enemies are allies and activates trait buffs on those enemies.

What this means, essentially is that I been unknowingly aided my enemies, that borg boss was difficult, now I will still use these, but see this as a warning.

    Hunter's Instinct Trait Missing Something

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 08:39 AM PST

A really nice feature to add to this trait would be to allow standard Cloak, Mask Energy Signature, Ambush Marker, and any other "out of combat" abilities other than Full Impulse to be used during the window of time after you destroy a enemy.
