$250 is not a good look for 4 ships

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:02 AM PST

Players don't see extras as viable, players only see ships, 4 ships ain't worth this cost. Just comes across as super greedy. Poor show Devs, pretty low blow.

This game has become nothing more than a money pit the past year or so, so little new content at such a slow pace but the number of insanely bloated bundles and gambling boxes has seemd like a constant or increasing push. I get it's F2P, but there has to be a ballance between premium content and actual free gameplay elements and content. For a long while there just hasn't been, feel like the sheer cheek of the prices is just cashing in on nostalgia knowing some poor sap will buy it rather than food that month due to the rather massive global pandemic and increasing issues of poverty.

Feck these guys. For too long Cryptic have shown they give so few craps regarding the health of the player base or actual content, the recent Klingon redux barely covers the deficit. They would rather push insanely overpriced bundles and overtly problematic gambling mechanics that they hide behind ingame currency to avoid being shut down by anti-gambling laws. It's sick.

Round of Applause for the Dev Team

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:50 PM PST

    /u/ambassadorkael

I know that with the earlier announcement of the new anniversary legendary bundle, you guys have been strapped down under a heat lamp, but I wanted to take a moment to thank y'all for what has been a mostly well-received anniversary event.

A lot of us really wanted a new recruit event, or at least a re-release of past recruit events. You delivered.

Without being asked, y'all revamped a LOT of things, great job on First City btw. Though that portal into the sub-levels of the Underworld...

Delivered some really great episodes, and even got Sam freakin Witwer into the game.

The new ship, while not HUGELY special, for free to play players, and those that can't won't spend money on T6 ships, it's a boon. The best part of that is the skin, which is able to be put on the original M'chla (which I hate the look) so that I can actually fly that ship now.

Much needed cosmetic features, specifically uniform selection, for the KDF. The base color of the uniforms is kinda meh, but when you go in and play with the color palette, you can really get some excellent results. And while I am NOT a fan of the new Disco look for Klingons in the show, the team really made them look better in my opinion.

That black alert/mycelial tribble! Worth the $10 for the charity bundle just for that.

While I have played a Klingon since launch, I never really bothered with melee. Just seemed to be a real hassle. Thanks to the recruit event, and the requirement to get melee kills to progress, I set up my away team so that skills complemented each other for melee support, and armed everybody but the medic with melee. Initially I did, but he kept going down. I've only had to switch over to ranged for one episode, and that was the boss in the gate room fight, in the Blood of the Ancients episode.

And, while I had played with raiders in the past, and understood flanking and ambushing, it was just easier to duke it out with battlecruisers or carriers. Tuesday and Wednesday were frustrating for everybody, but since the patch, it's been kind of enjoyable. Though the lack of a counter to show progress is definitely an issue.

I know I'm going to get flamed and downvoted for posting this. But, all karma is, is a series of 0's and 1's. I'm not an apologist. I am a paying customer, lifer from the beginning. I have invested money into the continued development of this game. nobody is trying to white wash the disappointment from the new legendary pack. It's just nice to hear some appreciation for your hard work, especially on a day where it seems like the entire world is out to get you.

2500 Melee Kills: Or, AFK for fun and profit.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:10 PM PST

I just completed the 2500 melee kill goal on my KDF recruit, and I did it almost entirely AFK. I figure I ought to share the process for anyone else that may be interested in getting it done with minimal pain. The steps are below:

    1. Get a melee weapon that has a lunge feature; swords, Furiadon Fangs, or even the Bat'leth of Sto'Vo'Kor.
    2. Enable auto attack for your weapons.
      1. Options -> Control (Ground), Auto attack -> Toggle, never cancels.
      2. Right-click on your weapon attacks to enable auto attack. Some weapons should only have primary and secondary set to auto, some should have all three.
    3. Set up three healer BOffs and one shield heal BOff.
    4. IMPORTANT: Under Options -> Controls (Ground), make sure "Select attacker if attacked" is "On".
    5. Launch the mission "Partisans" and fight through the first bar section.
    6. When you get to the Arena, set your BOffs to passive and activate "Threatening Posture".
    7. Walk to all three generators so the creatures start spawning.
    8. Go to one of the initial spawn areas and start attacking one of the creatures.
    9. Get up, stretch your legs, and let it go for a while.

That's it. It took a while, especially since Adet'Pa and Martok will sometimes take aggro, but eventually something will attack you. And I did have to respawn once or twice when the creatures killed my healers, but I was only running with two (and a "useless for this purpose" tac BOff). But my interaction was very minimal outside of getting to that point and just letting the game take care of itself.

I hope this helps anyone else to complete this goal.

Edit: Added enabling auto-attack for ground weapons.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 11:39 AM PST

Note: I had to shorten the title to fit the size limits and was not intentionally editing the quote.

Anyway, this was actually the reply in another thread, but I wanted to make sure everyone sees it:

Ok, I'll step in quick here, because I don't want to fan the flames of false hope. This is the big Legendary Bundle for this year. There may be other Legendary Bundles this year, including one I think you'll like based on the reaction today, but they will be on the scale of the Romulan, Discovery and Mirror Bundles. There aren't any plans for a ten ship bundle, I'm sorry.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/l7z2dw/pro_tip_read_the_actual_title_of_the_bundle/gla01rn/

And that officially confirms there will not be a KDF bundle on par with the original Fed bundle.

Happy Year of Klingon everyone! /s

    But seriously though.

So, "there aren't any plans for a ten ship bundle", huh? I've got a solution for you: change the plans. You(Cryptic) had the chance to have this whole "Year of Klingon" thing go down in STO history as something really great. You are about half way there so far, with the revamped missions and recruitment. The big KDF legendary bundle would have been the ultimate finisher. Instead, we're getting a whimper. Fix this while you still have time and let the 'Year of Klingon' be awesome, not a dud.

If you don't, the term "Year of Klingon" is going to become a joke for when something doesn't live up to the hype, like Al's "best expansion ever and the players love it".

Modern Doffing: A 2021 Guide to Duty Officers

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 05:04 PM PST

    Introduction

Last year, I finally got around to completing the grind to six T4 commendation ranks on both my Temporal and Gamma recruits. I had held off on this due to the perceived difficulty in doing so, and because the available information on doffing is essentially years out of date. With the help of a variety of resources and advice, I was able to complete this work in a far shorter amount of time than I expected. It was at that point that I first considered collating what I had learned into a new doffing guide.

The 2/27 changes to Admiralty pushed me over the edge. With the easy Dilithium from Admiralty removed, restoring older methods of Dil-farming became far more imperative. For a long time, doffing was one of the easiest of these. A variety of changes to the system, however, have made it not more difficult but less intuitive. With a proper guide, Dil-farming through Contraband Marauding and/or Colonial assignment chaining should be just as easy as it was previously. My goal is to provide that guide--and a broader guide to doffing as well.

Note that this is still a work in progress. I am releasing it now because of the recruitment event in progress, but I do intend to expand on all points which are simply outlined below.

    Version History

0.1: Alpha release. Targeted areas for improvement besides incomplete sections include a more comprehensive guide to marauding (once I experiment with it a little more), a more accurate ranking of commendation difficulties (where exactly do Diplomacy, Exploration, Marauding, and Development rank compared to the rest?), and more information on dilithium grinding (most of which I know primarily second-hand).

    What is Doffing?

A long time ago, STO included something called "Exploration Clusters." These areas included procedurally-generated missions of... questionable quality, mostly revolving around giving a random NPC a certain amount of commodities. This system was eventually removed for many reasons--one of them being that the missions it gave felt like something lower-ranking officers should be doing.

To replace it, the Duty Officer system was introduced. It allows players to assign duty officers ("doffs") to missions that are more fitting of a junior officer--auditing diplomatic correspondence, correlating star charts, etc. These missions take place "in the background," so to speak, and happen in real-world time. In essence, they are "fire and forget:" assign your officers, wait some real-world number of hours, and reap the rewards.

And speaking of rewards: through the doffing system, it is possible to earn XP, dilithium, energy credits, rare commodities, equipment, special bridge officers, and even additional doffs. When managed correctly, doffing can be quite lucrative on a number of levels.

    What Makes A (Good) Doff

The short answer is that almost every element of a doff in some way influences how useful that doff is. Some elements, however, are more important than others. In this section, I will explain the various traits of a doff and how they impact gameplay.

    Faction

Most doffs are aligned to a faction--either FED, KDF, or ROM, with the vast majority being either FED or KDF (and consequently usable by those faction's allies). Cross-faction doffs do also exist, mostly as special rewards or as part of C-Store doff packs. If you are buying doffs from the Exchange, always check to ensure that the doff you are buying is usable by your faction. By default the Exchange lists all doffs, whether your character can use them or not. Caveat emptor.

    Rarity

Doffs follow the same rarity scheme as items: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare, Ultra-Rare, and Epic. The obvious benefit of higher-rarity doffs is that they contribute a higher chance of success to a mission. However, a particularly large benefit when grinding is that they also contribute bonus Commendation XP to a success or crit based on their rarity. Uncommons contribute +5%, Rares +10%, and Very Rare and higher contribute +20%. Thus, in many ways the rarity of a doff is the most important factor when grinding Commendation XP.

    R&D School

Some doffs are affiliated with certain R&D schools, allowing them to be used to create certain items. Any more of an in-depth look than that is somewhat outside the scope of this guide; however, do note that R&D doffs are valuable even at lower rarities. Always double-check for this before selling, downgrinding, etc.

    Department

Each doff either belongs to one of the six departments (tactical, security, engineering, operations, science and medical) or is a civilian. This is one of the factors that determines which doffs can go on which missions. There is little to say here beyond that civilians are generally worse than the other types, as they qualify for fewer missions.

    Specialization

This is the other major sorting mechanism for which doffs can go on what missions. It also determines the doff's ability when added to your active roster. Note that many specializations have more than one ability; usually, the alternate abilities can only be obtained from sources such as lockboxes.

    Ability

The ability is what sets the price for doffs, generally speaking. Some abilities are borderline useless; some have created the most famous builds in the game. For example, the Technician variant that boosts Auxiliary Power to the Battery is the entire focal point of A2B builds--and, therefore, Technicians command a very high price. Also of note are Aegis doffs, which function similarly to R&D school doffs. Do note, however, that for the purposes of the doffing mission system abilities do not matter at all.

    Traits

Traits give you bonuses to the chances of various outcomes on certain missions. For example, a Peaceful doff may get a bonus on a Diplomacy mission. Do note that when farming Commendation XP, one should try to have as many Critical Success traits as possible but as few Success traits as possible. This is because Success chance cuts into Critical Success chance.

In general, be on the lookout for doffs with the Telekinetic, Shroud, and Resolve traits, as these are required for some very rewarding missions. Efficient is also almost always helpful when it appears. Conversely, Stubborn and Unscrupulous are almost always negative; for any departments other than Tactical or Security, Aggressive is as well.

    Bound/Unbound

Like items, doffs can be bound to your character. This will ONLY happen if they are put on active duty. The major disadvantage of binding doffs, aside from not being able to trade them, is that most bound doffs cannot be downground into multiple doffs of lower rarity.

    Race, Name, Quote, Etc.

The other descriptive attributes of your doffs are pure flavor and do not matter. Do note, however, that doffs with odd, offensive, or funny names can command a slightly higher price on the exchange.

    Obtaining Doffs For Doffing

There are a number of different methods to obtain doffs--some more worthwhile than others. Before you waste time and credits, however, always check to make sure you do not have free doffs waiting.

    Doffs You May Already Have

    • DS9 Bundle: The DS9 bundle includes three doffs. While most of the bundle can only be used by Federation-aligned characters, Klingon-aligned ones can in fact still claim the doffs through a Klingon version in the Zen store. (It also includes two scaling ground weapons.)
    • Legacy of Romulus Pack: The Legacy of Romulus Pack includes four doffs, available to any Romulan characters across the entire account.
    • Delta Rising Pack: The Delta Rising Pack includes three doffs available to all characters on an account, including a Research Lab Scientist (useful for R&D).
    • Mirror Universe Bundle: Also sometimes called the Legendary Galaxy Dreadnought Bundle, this bundle does come with one doff.
    • Promotions: Several doffs have been given away for free in the past. These include Neal Falconer and the doff version of Holo-Leeta previously given out at conventions.

    Worthwhile Assignments Rewarding Doffs

    • Asylum assignment type): These allow you to exchange refugees for random doffs. While these are generally good deals, the assignments are somewhat rare to appear and (unlike prisoners) refugees take up slots on your main roster. I would also advise against exchanging high-rarity refugees in these assignments; there are some doff assignments (especially in Medical) that require refugees specifically. Try to match the race of the refugee to the Asylum's planet.
    • Caitian Diaspora / Unforgiven of Ferasa assignment chains: Awards a very rare flight deck officer and unlocks a repeatable assignment to get more.
    • Colonization mission chains: These are a major source of doffs, as one chain is available in each colonial cluster. They end by rewarding a rare doff and unlocking a repeatable chance at a very rare via critting on an assignment. This is the most common source of Very Rare Technicians.
    • Consular Authority assignment chains: Found in the Alpha Quadrant, these chains each end with a repeatable assignment which allow one to trade one doff for one of (likely) equal or better value. Notably, this officer comes unbound--and the officer you send can be bound. Thus, this is an indirect method of "unbinding" officers.
    • Cultural Exchange assignments: Available only to the Federation, there are ten of these (one is linked as an example).
    • Exchange Prisoners with Dominion: Your best use for rare and very rare prisoners.
    • Facility 4028 assignment chain: Rewards a rare prisoner upon completion and unlocks a repeatable assignment, Strike At Fugitive Support Network, which can award rare or very rare prisoners.
    • Ghosts of the Jem'Hadar assignment chain: This assignment chain awards a very rare officer upon completion and unlocks a repeatable assignment which awards another on a critical success.
    • Holodeck Performance of Hamlet: This assignment always awards a very rare doff on a crit.
    • Instigate Defection: It takes a long time to complete, but awards a rare officer on success and a very rare officer on a crit.
    • Investigate Temporal Anomaly: A non-repeatable assignment which awards a purple-quality bartender.
    • Negotiate Prisoner Exchange: Allows you to trade a prisoner for a new, random doff. This is always a good trade for common prisoners, especially if you already have access to admiralty. Look for other opportunities for rare or very rare prisoners.
    • Project Chrysalis assignment chain: This assignment chain awards a very rare officer upon completion.
    • Reclaim Assimilated Borg Drones: Awards an uncommon or rare doff on a crit.
    • Resettle Colonists: Awards five colonists on success.
    • Special Deal on Entertainment Provisions: Awards an entertainer of the same rarity as the assignment on a crit.
    • Your faction's academy has department-specific recruitment missions which are free and award common doffs. This is a fine way to fill out your initial roster.
    • Finally, many Marauding assignments have a chance of awarding prisoners.

    Other Worthwhile Methods

    • One of the best methods of helping a new character is mailing them unbound doffs from your other ones. Doffs can be attached to messages at mail terminals just like items.
    • At level 11, a character receives their initial consignment of doffs. These are low-rarity, but free. Free is never bad. You will receive a few more as you level up.
    • Likewise, when you unlock the R&D system at level 15 you will receive a cadre of common, traitless doffs. They are meant to be used with crafting, but can be used in assignments as normal.
    • A number of story missions have doff rewards. These include A Fistful of Gorn, Facility 4028, All That Glitters, A New Warfare, Time In A Bottle, and the Halloween/Friday the 13th special mission Hearts and Minds. Of these, A Fistful of Gorn, All That Glitters, and Hearts and Minds can be replayed for additional duty officers. In addition, a Romulan captain (or one with Rank 4 in Diplomacy/Marauding) can recruit Rai during Mine Enemy.
    • As you are promoted through the Commendation ranks, you will receive free doffs at your faction's academy. Any that you do not select may be purchased with dilithium, though this may be less attractive for higher-rarity options. In addition, Engineering, Security, and Medical commendation ranks will unlock additional doffs via your replicator.
    • Several doffs are available through the Phoenix Box. Always check your promotions tab to ensure that you do not already own them--the game will let you buy them even if they're available to claim for free. With that said, if you really need higher-rarity doffs this can be a good source.
    • If all else fails, the Exchange usually has exactly what you want. Do note that prices can be quite high.

    Methods Which Are NOT Worthwhile

    • "Upgrinding," or converting lower-rarity doffs into higher-ranking doffs through the assignments available at a faction academy, are absolutely never worth the time, dilithium, or doff investment. Do note that "downgrinding" assignments can be useful for fleet contributions.
    • For similar reasons, the academy recruitment assignments which cost dilithium are also not worthwhile.
    • The individual doff packs available through the C-Store are simply not worth the money based on the random return. The exception is, of course, when they are occasionally given away for free as part of a promotion.
    • Fleet doffs can be recruited by spending an absolutely outrageous number of fleddits for each doff purchased. This is also never worth it given the cost. The main use of fleet doffs is when you need a specific one for your build.
    • I am of the personal belief that the various assignment items available from lockboxes or the exchange which can lead to doff rewards are not worth the cost. Others disagree.

    Doffing Builds

    Faction

If you are building a character solely for the purposes of doffing, the KDF has many advantages over the Federation in terms of assignment access. You should be a KDF-aligned Romulan, however, as Romulans have access to a third set of doffs the other two factions cannot use. (If you have purchased the Legacy of Romulus Pack, they also have access to four bonus doffs.)

    Race

Race only matters for the Federation; Ferengi offer a marginal benefit in reducing the cost of purchased commodities that may be required for missions. Play whatever race you would like to play.

    Ships

    • Suliban Cell Ship
    • Tuffli Freighter
    • Kobayashi Maru
    • Nandi (Event)--We are not talking about the Nagus. I am still bitter that I do not have one.
    • D'Kora Marauder
    • Excelsior-class ships: the T5 and T6 ones come with ten transwarp locations. The T3 only comes with 3 but has a console that cuts transwarp cooldown in half (and can be had with nothing but dilithium).

    Equipment

    • Assimilated Subtranswarp Engine/Gamma Synergistic Overcharged Core
    • Ferengi Marauder Set (Lobi)--If grinding CXP and/or using the D'Kora/Nandi
    • Transwarp Computer (FED)
    • Extensively-Modified Warp Core (FED)
    • Purple Astrometrics Scientist

    Traits

Well Traveled: Cuts transwarp cooldown by 20%.

    Boosts

Obviously, if you are grinding Commendation XP you should buy as many Commendation XP boosters as you can afford.

    Commodities

    • Communications Arrays and Provisions from Andoria (FED)

Seeking a group of players that only fly canon Fed ships

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:29 PM PST

Since I've been playing this game I have had this weird compulsion to only fly ships from the TOS Movie-Voyager era. I even limit myself to canon style weapon loadouts and aesthetic in both space and ground combat. The thought of recreating those DS9 style fleets with some friends sounds super fun to me. Does anybody else do this?

B'eta's daily missions (Turret Killer, Most Dangerous Game, etc.) are unavailable to new KDF characters.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:08 AM PST

They remain available on existing KDF and KDF-Rom (but still not KDF-Jem) characters made before TYoK.

From what I understand, unlocking these missions on a KDF character required doing one of the KDF-side PvP tutorial missions (I always just did the warzone one). Those tutorial missions have apparently now been removed from the game, meaning that B'eta's dailies are now forever locked to any and all new KDF characters. This would easily be solved by removing that requirement, and allowing the missions to be taken by any KDF character who's finished the tutorial.

While most cutscenes already are, and ss nice as some cutscenes may be, sometimes they just drag on and keep you from playing because you can´t skip them.

Especially if you play/ have played multiple characters, it gets on your nerves. I dont need to see the long welcome to New Romulus for the 50th time. I dont need the briefing on the Dyson Sphere again. And if you want new players to experience the Story, thats all good, but then make it so that you can skip it on all other characters afterwards.

It would be a simple but effective QoL change. So obviously its never gonna be implemented.

Increased rubber banding and slow response time in Sector Space

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:26 PM PST

I just completed my daily Tour of the Galaxy, I lost 60- 90 seconds because of rubber banding and the second it takes to register the system you go to.

    For Comparison:

    1) I usually finish the Beta quadrant with about 4 minutes to space (30 seconds of load time between quadrants), going down to defera then DS9, then betazed then up to the final system with about 20-30 seconds to spare.

    2) Today I didn't even make it to Defera.

Is anyone else having this problem?
