Just throwing it out there: What if the name of the Morrigu class was derived from Irish mythology

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 05:02 AM PDT

So in my studies of mythology and stuff, I came across a group of war goddesses called the Morrigan in Irish mythology. An alternative name for them is "Morrigu".

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Morr%C3%ADgan

You can see on the right-hand side that there is an image of a crow that the Morrigu is depicted as. On top of that, it seems that they actually have something to do with battle and war.

So either way, it seems like inspiration to name a new class of warbirds the "Morrigu" class.

Ten Froward Weekly 30.09.2020: Brand New TFO Reveal

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:38 PM PDT

    Link: Twitch, Facebook

    Theme: Brand New TFO Reveal

Guest: Senior Content Designer John Henger

No Facebook recording for this one. Mike isn't sure why it hadn't started there.

    • John was senior designer in City of Heroes and moved to STO during S15.
      • Among other things he did Operation Riposte, To Hell with Honour and Best Served Cold TFOs, and First Contact Day ground mission patrol.
    • Someone, "in some kind of revenge", signed up Mike's email for a ton of trash spam, he was besieged by hundreds of survey companies.
      • Okay, jabs at him were already becoming very hostile, but that's too much.
    • Set gear reward is an experiment they're trying and Andre's proposal.
    • Mike about Widening Gyre name: "It's just a word that makes you sound smart. That's how you name Star Trek things."
    • This space set won't have visuals.
    • TFO is called Synthwave. We defend Utopia Plantia against synth assault.
      • So... yep, another simulation.
      • This was originally working title, but Mike pitched the idea to make it an actual one.
      • Inner joke: name fits because attack happened in 85, even if wrong century.
    • Idea was about the overwhelming attack that can't be stopped and about just saving as much people as possible.
      • It's kind of no-win scenario.
    • We'd have shrinking operation area. Lore reason - more and more satellites overtaken.
    • Cryptic hadn't decided yet whether to extinguish the Mars or to keep it burning and how to present it.
      • They feel they have to be careful now that there's a show that's catching up.
      • They're bit scared about that whole predicament, but so far hadn't seen anything ground-breaking that required major retcons.
        • Mike repeated inside (but unofficial) joke that temporal manipulations during the iconian war are the reason for canon discrepancies.
    • You'd be moving to marked beam-up points in space to pick up people and move them to mothballed ships, transports or central station.
      • Your ship can hold up to 3 groups.
      • Different recipient NPC ships require different amount of people to crew.
        • 1 for transports and frigates, 2 for cruisers, 3 for battleships.
        • Transports would just come to main station for the first stage, then evacuate people and then warp out during the second, combat ships would join the fight for the first stage.
      • Should you have people on board upon death, they're considered lost.
    • TFO would have 2 stages: 1) beaming up of people from the surface and 2) escort of the departing ships.
    • Planetary destruction was drawn beautifully.
    • WiP icon for synth - synthale bottle.
    • Some "Defender" game came up often during the internal discussions.
    • Synth ships are squishy.
      • Frigates are weaker and go after the mothballed ships, destroyers are stronger and go after the players.
      • They use AP damage.
    • We now have federation transport from Picard show, adapted from the model received from CBS.
    • TFO is purely timed, efforts increase the reward, not speed.
      • It's about 16 minutes.
      • Because of longer than average play time, TFO has bigger per minute mark reward.
    • Should you wander out of safe area, you'd be targeted by hijacked defence satellites. You'd receive lock-on timer and then satellites would start making slow-charging, but powerful shots of phaser damage.
      • Pets and summoned allies should also be targeted, on a separate timer.
    • John: "It is an interesting force multiplier as it doesn't take many more synth to make it feel more crowded in a smaller area."
    • Should you not want to play TFO, you can fully progress the event by replaying the episode that would be released at the same time.
    • TFO was designed to be uncomfortably chaotic by the end phase.
    • In lore you're supposed to play the role of ships scrambled to respond and respawns are additional ships arriving (a-la Wolf 359).
    • They moved to launch day information dumps so that people following the hype of the new thing would arrive in the time of the new thing, not days/weeks prior.
    • They do have now permission from CBS for "long" hairstyle for ferasans and caitians.
    • Inner playtests of average players from the team have ~120 max marks.
    • Set has nice offensive bonuses, and also nice things for sci control users.
      • Deflector: +Stealth, +Exotic damage, +Drain, upon firing mode activation additional +Control and +Exotic damage.
      • Combat Engine: upon control ability activation +Weapon CrtH.
      • Aux Core: +Control and +CrtD.
      • Covariant Shield: bonus damage based on aux power.
      • "Imperial rift" set bonus names:
        • Set2: House Mo'Kai Science
        • Set3: We Do What We Must
        • Set4: Because We Can
        • Now sing those lines together. :)

Technically stream watchers saw name and loading screen for new update, but since Mike didn't want to show it yet, so I'll refrain for saying more. I may have said too much already. Let's call it dedication bonus.

    [Xbox] Need a training Fleet

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:25 AM PDT

I just started playing the game recently, hit 65 the other day, and I have a looooot to learn about STO. My entire experience of the game so far has been single player, and while I enjoy that, I know there's more out there. But I also know I probably have no idea what I'm doing and I don't want to inflict my toxic newbishness on random TFOs. Is there a Fleet out there for people like me? I've tried to use the finder in-game, but it's not so great.

    Thank you for your time!

    German announcement for the TFO

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:07 AM PDT

“100% reduction in recharge time” isn’t 0 seconds?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:21 AM PDT

Like a 100% reduction in Slipstream recharge time doesn't drop it to 0 seconds (60 seconds - 100%).

    And a 50% reduction isn't 30 seconds.

Has anyone figured out how the math works for recharge time reductions?

Things like the Phoenix replica small craft, assimilated assault cruiser or the ISS Stadi, are these flyable, usable ships or just admiralty cards? The descriptions are, well, empty is what they are

    Ten Forward Weekly 09/30/20

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 07:10 PM PDT

    • Future TFO events may reward more sets, this is an experiment
    • Andre was pushing for new item sets
    • New TFO: Synth Wave
    • TFO involves the synth attack on Utopia Planitia
    • TFO is focused on trying to rescue as many people as possible from the surface during the unstoppable synth attack
    • TFO arena shrinks over time
    • No plans to make Utopia Planitia on fire in 2409/2410/2411
    • No decision yet on changing STO to match Picard more closely.
    • Some internal talk about blaming the changes on us mucking with time during the Iconian War
    • There will be an advanced and elite version of "To Hell with Honor". No ETA.
    • Commander Burgess narrates the TFO
    • Fly into circles to pick up people from the surface. Deliver them to transport ships. Transport ships need to be defended, and can hold differing amount of people depending on class of transport.
    • They got the official Federation Mars transport model from Picard, used in the TFO
    • TFO is about 16 minutes long
    • Jessie Heining made a design for a STO Battle Royale mode as an experiment. Not sure if they will actually do it ever.
    • Started doing the official content reveals on the day it launches because media was picking up the articles about things like guest VAs, and people were disappointed the content wasn't playable right then
    • Launch date for the new content is sooner then we think
    • No forced ship skins like in Battle of the Binary Stars due to Picard being so close to STO's timeframe
    • Kael thinks they now have permission to do long hairstyles(like M'Ress) for Caitians and Ferasans
    • 182 possible marks from the TFO
    • No unique looks for the new set items
    • Lead character artist wants to remake the humanoid body model to be higher quality. No eta on when that might happen
    • No info on if/when the synth ships will be playable

    Simple GUI QOL please.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Make the "active" mission appropriate thing the priority, not top of the list. So sick of pressing F and it takes items (which only happens 75% of the time) when I should be doing other stuff. Like Azure Neb Rescue, why am I not pressing anything and the tractor beam stops....and then the next "F" takes items? It's bad enough it stops for no reason (no launch, no damages, no getting out of range). And Hypermass is the same, why does it take 1 attempt or 5 attempts to get a particle, and deliver it too? With nothing happening? P.S. I love the Hypermass TFO, but with no affects on your ship and it takes 7 attempts to grab a part of? Come on!

    STO_Memes

Within the past week, given some events in relation to a goof from an official blog that may have sparks some memes. A subreddit has been created (STO_Memes).

Hoping this will allow those that like to create and post memes that still fit within STO an outlet to have some fun. The hope is this will allow the official STO subreddit site to remain clean and free of clutter that could happen with memes on a normal basis.
