A Perspective on the STO Economy

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 02:30 PM PST

Happy holidays everyone! The post here is more of a super short TL;DR of some of the most important content available on one of my recently posted video. It goes over my personal opinions on how the economy of this game currently works – and a few ways that Cryptic might actually fix a few of its elements. The 2-hour long video and the non-ranty 20-page script are linked here if you want more information/details.

    Part 1: Lootbox Discussion

Most modern MMO's today need both a solid F2P audience as well as a group of players willing to spend a little real money to not have to farm as much in the world. MMO's typically have natural inflation that occurs when the raided loot from defeated enemies isn't spent/burnt away. MMO's remove these currencies via "money sinks" to ensure that the economy can stay balanced (to varied successes).

This is done by encouraging players to exchanging items that have economic value (things that have utility, scarcity, & transferability) for things that lack one of those elements – most commonly via removing the transferability of items via "bind-to-character" or "bind-to-account" types of items.

SOB did a great post a while ago about the true cost of exchange starships, but he didn't go over the rough probabilities of those starships – and the true cost of obtaining those starships through the lootbox systems in this game. So, here those added stats are for you all to enjoy (with optimal Zen usage to get the starships).

Starship Type Chance % Cost/Chance Average Opening Cost Exchange Price
    Z-Store Starships Direct Purchase N/A 3,000 Zen N/A
    Phoenix Starships 1/500 4,000 Dil/Pack 4,000 Zen (at 500 dil/Zen) N/A
    Lobi Starships 900 Lobi 4.5 Lobi/LB, 10 Lobi/Promo 22,500 Zen 200 million EC
    Lockbox Starships 1/200 112.5 Zen/Key 22,500 Zen 420 million EC
    Promo Starships 1/90 250 Zen/Pack 22,500 Zen 1.1 billion EC

There are the stats for you, from both the raw probabilities that I could figure out, as well as the estimated Zen costs for each of the main starship types in STO. In my opinion, Lobi starships are quite a bit undervalued as a result of what is really required to get them.

Also, if you use binomial distribution on all of these starship types, you get this distribution on players that buy the full chance on a starship (500 Phoenix Packs, 200 Lockbox openings, 90 Promo Packs) – the numbers are virtually the same for all of them by the way:

26% of players: Earn 2+ lootbox starships, 37% of players: Earn 1 lootbox starship, 37% of players: Earn 0 lootbox starships (which all averages out to 1 starship/player that participates in this system).

It would be nice if Cryptic just told the playerbase "Look, we understand that for those of you that open lootboxes in our game – about 37% of you will be complete losers. It's just part of how our game works!"

Part 2: Ways to make the Economy Better

    (1) Add craftable starships to R&D crafting

**Economy here super messed over with permanent Phoenix upgrades now in-game**

    Cruiser, Escort, & Science Vessel

Starship components from R&D Level 20 categories

Better rarity components = better rarity final starship

Better rarity starship = more/better specialist seating on the starships

    • Epic – Cmdr Spec + LtCmdr Spec (diff)

    • Ultra Rare – Cmdr Spec + Lt Spec (diff)

    • Very Rare – Cmdr Spec + Lt Spec (same)

    • Uncommon – Cmdr Spec

    • Common – LtCmdr Spec

    (2) Allow lootbox starships to be directly purchased legally

**Discourages people from directly buying lootbox starships from 3rd party websites**

    Either from Arcgames website

Or from Z-Store (Z-Store is more problematic, but better if properly implemented)

    (3) Better consolation for Lootbox Losers

Use Upgrade system as a visual baseline

If players can't get a lootbox starship after [xyz] Zen expended, have next box guarantee getting a lootbox starship

There I was, all ready to start a KDF Cardassian SCI toon...

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 08:09 AM PST

And although I've read you can buy the playable character option in the zen store for 1000 zen, the only place I can seem to find it is as part of the Victory is Life expansion pack...for 15000 zen. Am I out to lunch or do I really have to shell out that kind of cash to start a cardassian toon?

    Keyboard piano still a thing?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 07:16 AM PST

I played STO back in the day and I didn't like how in ship mode you basically had 30 or so buttons on hotkeys with different officer abilities. Is this still a thing?

Is the Universe Temporal Heavy Dreadnought Cruiser on PS4?

I want the Universe Temporal Heavy Dreadnought Cruiser but I can't find it on the exchange. How can I acquire it otherwise?

    Newb question: overflow bag?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 01:48 AM PST

I'm a new player and I'm a little confused about one aspect of the game that just popped up. I seem to have a bunch of duty officers in an "overflow bag." I can't move them anywhere. I dismiss some of my lower-ranking current duty officers and still can't move them anywhere. I can't seem to find any details about any of them (are they rare? are they common? who are these people?). Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Finally! An EPIC Phoenix Pack

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 11:35 AM PST

I've been playing this game for 6 years and finally pulled my first epic pack. I don't know why I got them I really didn't need the upgrades. I just bought a stack on a whim. I got my epic pack. Now I have a choice to make. Kobali Samsar or Feringi Nandi....

I'm just coming back from taking a break for a few months and I am wondering if the full Kobali set is still viable for tanking? Otherwise, does anyone have an opinion on one ship vs the other? Thanks in advance for your input.

What ships from other Star Trek games and other media would you like to see in STO?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 11:43 PM PST

Per Thomas, the Franz Joseph designs are out - e.g. Saladin-class.

And, for clarity, I mean pretty much any licensed work (i.e. not fanon or fan-fic) other than films and movies.

Was another sale supposed to start today?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 04:30 PM PST

I noticed that - on PS4 at least - the key sale is still going on despite being announced as ending this morning. It would make sense for another sale to start today, making each sale 2 days, so that one coincides with Christmas.

    Question about Krenim Boff Traits

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 01:50 PM PST

They come with Flux for Ground and Temporal x for Space. The other 2 traits are randomly created.

Are the 2 random traits just for ground? Or could you possibly get one of the other space traits like Efficent or Pirate?
