Ten Forward Weekly 30.04.2020: La Sirena

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:09 PM PDT

Link: Twitch [52:24] (extra twitchy today) (saved vid have wrong caption from Neverwinter stream for some reason, even though it was fine on stream itself; ignore it)

    Theme: La Sirena

Guests: Lead Systems Designer Jeremy Randall and Lead Ship and UI Artist Thomas Marrone

Apparently Mike's personal internet can't handle stream, Discord conference and game at the same time. There were some lags, for some time that was outright podcast with static image. But, as Jeremy said, at least it didn't crash completely.

Also: Hey, It's my anniversary! I've been doing this for a year now. I like to think I improved since then.

    • Jeremy also has cats, so he's fully permitted to be on the stream.
    • They got 3D model from CBS. That allowed for kind of tracing, that considerably simplified making sure ship is proper, especially since ship is just without moving part. (Thomas later said that pods on the sides have visible hinges.)
      • Those models they get are untextured Maya files and sometimes some renders.
      • Ship is upscaled: canonical size is 85 m, while STO is about 100-110 m, and windows are scaled down accordingly.
      • Upscaling the small ships to be "capital ship" and saying that it's different ship that is "inspired by" is a handwavy thing to do.
        • Thomas mentioned Jellyfish and D4x BoP receiving same treatment. That's also where "x" came from in the latter's name.
    • Mike: "Well, now we get to look at this beautiful loading screen art that Thomas made for the Defence of Pahvo. Thomas, you might to tell us little bit about how this loading screen came together?" Thomas: "I took some art that Joe made a long time ago and made it bigger." *Pause* Mike: "Fabulous. Thank you."
    • And that was the moment net channel failed, image froze and we turned into podcast.
    • Original La Sirena isn't that "small", like not runabout kind of small, as it is a cargo hauler, but one giant window made it look so.
    • Thomas is sure that they tried to make ship not to look Starfleet at all, both in shape or colours.
    • Right now it only have one material because of very specific pattern.
    • That colourful paint is fully customizable and one can cover the ship in solid colour or some wild combination (like risian ships, I guess).
    • Hilariously, devs saw the hologram crew in the beginning of the series, took a risk and logically continued the theme by creating the same photonic fleet-like ability before the series did same thing later (about two weeks later), though they did a little modifications after that.
      • Thomas: "It was pretty impressive that we had just stumbled into the correct thing to do."
      • Console would only create La Sirena's doubles because they are build as pilot ships and pilot manurers on Ent-J would look... well...
        • (I got flashback to that one time they plastered DS9 model on pilot escort.)
        • Additionally, they wanted console stand out because they have a lot of ship-copying powers.
        • Image of console in action for blog was hard to make for Mike.
    • It is pilot ship because of how it flew in the series.
    • Experimental weapon is based upon a battle with romulan BoP, specifically coordinated strike that severed the nacelle. If ally shoots at the same target as you, they'll also shoot beam for free.
      • Hangar pets won't do it... as they're classified the same as mines and heavy torpedoes and Cryptic don't want mines to start shooting.
        • Mike: "Although that would be hilarious if mines and torpedoes started shooting."
      • It does work on larger pets, though, including ones summoned by ship's console
    • It is raider with universal seating because it was versatile, but light and nimble ship.
      • Yes, two commander positions.
    • Trait was inspired by ships captain, Rios, not by the ship.
    • (At that point delay was 5 minutes.)
    • They weren't able to devote artist's time to create a bridge.
    • They don't want to get Patrick Stewart as just a cameo, and rather they want to dedicate a season for him.
    • Ships in STO have 2 options: either explode or commit war crimes.
    • Cat crashed into Thomas'es chair. He took her and showed bonus cat to the camera. Bonus cat looked unimpressed.
      • Thomas: "I'm only doing that to her because she's crashed into the side of my chair, so I'm training her that like if she tries to get my attention, she's going to get my attention, but in the was she might not actually like."
    • They were considering nerfing Argala's insanely huge drop loot rewards, but decided that there would be a riot, so they didn't and increased loot in other patrols instead.
      • They did it to test experimental weapon and though we reren't able to see it, apparently it did work on both holo ships and benthan allies.
    • Bonus chat Q&A from Jeremy:
      • Q: I wanted to know if we would see any more ships from the lockbox in the Store one day
        • A: Yes. The answer was that the Benthan was an experiment, and we think it went well. It's likely more similar ships will show up in the future. We also spoke quite a bit about other non-ship items, such as things from the Infinity Lock Box, could be moved elsewhere in the future for more exposure. You saw similar with the introduction of the Tzenkethi ship on the lobi store, briefly. I wouldn't count on *all* LB ships appearing in Mudd's. For now, we're mostly looking at ships that appear to be able to benefit from greater exposure.
        • Q: I assume this'll be focused on things that didn't get to be super popular in their lockbox run or are from a long time back
        • A: I think that's a fair assumption, broadly-speaking. I'm sorry, but I can't provide any information about specific ships or other items. You'll have to wait for them to be announced.
      • Q: Are any new playable races being worked on or any old races being upgraded ?
        • A: Klingons! We just put out a Blog about improvements coming to KDF play. I don't have answers for you re: Klingon features/details at this time. But more information will continue to be released over time. It's going to be our focus for awhile.

On PS4 on Klingon toon and none of the 1-4 ships show up in the zen store or the dilithium store? I’m after the Ningtao variant with the disruptive quad cannons but can’t find that variant anywhere?

A preemptive plea: FOMO, coronavirus, and the potential upcoming Klingon Legendary Pack

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:58 AM PDT

So I bought the last Legendary Pack and absolutely loved it. I part-paid in dilithium-ground zen, so I personally felt it was great value for money all in all. The one thing that left a bitter taste in my mouth was the time-limited nature of it, an issue exacerbated by the ticking clock greeting you on the launch page. Effectively, the game was shouting "don't miss out" at every player on every login.

Fast forward to now, in the middle of a pandemic, with millions of people across the world finding their incomes reduced or removed, and with the future uncertain, I really, really hope Cryptic know that they cannot follow that business practice again. If the teasing of a Klingon legendary pack plays out and Cryptic try that ticking clock for a second time, hoping for that one moment of poor impulse control from people struggling with financial uncertainty and changing circumstances, then I think they will have fallen to a new low, which personally, would cause me to lose all respect, trust and willingness to support their business financially.

To be clear, I am not saying they can't release an expensive pack right now with exclusive ships that aren't sold separately. And I'm not saying they shouldn't charge tens of thousands of zen for it. They are a business and have to make money in this time as much as anyone else. I'm saying that if they try the psychological bullshit of a countdown-till-you've-missed-out-and-who-knows-if-they'll-ever-be-on-sale-again, right now, in the middle of all this, then they'll have passed the moral event horizon.

Cryptic would literally be saying to people who are dealing with a financial crisis like no other that you must go into debt to buy these ships, if you ever want any chance of flying them, because we will not confirm that they will ever be on sale again.

Now, they probably already know this. There are a hell of a lot of good people working for this company and I'd like to think they wouldn't stand for it. Hopefully, the Klingon Legendary Pack - if it even exists yet! - will be released in a non-time-limited nature or at the very least, Cryptic will confirm that both packs will return a couple of times a year.

But I have that niggling sense of doubt, hence this post.

And yes, I know that clock was still ticking on console even during the start of this outbreak, and yes, that bothers me, but it was put in place before people realised just how serious Covid-19 would be, so I'm going to desperately hope it was not a precedent.

    T6 Tuffli freighter idea

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:48 PM PDT

The recent question by /u/AmbassadorKael about the freighters led me to do a head-build of how a T6 freighter might work.

First off, of course, would be a reskin, both to bring it up to par with the T5 Galor and to add a Klingon green option. Additionally, if technically feasible, allowing folks who own the T6 Cardie ships to use the skins from the T6 Cardie VIL ships.

Certainly, they'd still have the goodies, but "upgraded": terminals on the bridge, instead of people, for the Exchange, the Banks, and Trade assignments. Additionally, it would have a Commodities terminal. Gotta be able to get supplies on-the-go!

Because it's a freighter, it would be "underpowered" on weapons but make up for it elsewhere, say 3F/1A or something like that, but it can equip dual cannons.

Because it's a freighter and they sometimes carry valuable cargo, so it's hull rating is a whopping 1.25 - high for it being a freighter - and a shield rating of 1.1, because they need some protection from pirates, after all.

It would have the T2 Tuffli's 5 device slots, but also have four each slots for Tac/Eng/Sci. It would also have four universal BOffs - an LtJG, Lt, LtCmdr and Cmdr. Freighters need to be adaptable to whatever cargo they're carrying and for whatever dangers lie on their route!

As well as having +5 bonus power to all, except auxiliary, which gets +15. Why does a freighter need extra power to auxiliary? Who knows.......

It would be a little low on maneuverability, however, because it's a freighter. Maybe a turn closer to a cruiser.

Additionally, as a surprise for would-be pirates, it has a fighters-only hangar, being stored in one of the aft cargo pods in case of heavy combat. Thus, the auxiliary bonus! Originally, I thought two, but that's a little bit overkill.

As for specialty, my immediate thought is Miracle Worker, which would give it a Cyclical QSD to ensure on-time delivery! As well as the Universal Console slot, and the Cmdr is also the MW chair.

It also has a built-in Tractor Beam I (like the...Danube, IIRC). Gotta move the cargo somehow!

Its console would be a universal console, the System-5 disruptor. The disruptor's power is some sort of formula based on your current weapons and auxiliary power, with a fractional bonus granted by shields and engines. Something along the lines of 50(3(W+A)+0.65(S+E)). Something to that effect. So if you paired Instinctive Rerouting with the S5D? Hoo-boy.

It does disruptor damage equal to the above value - 100 in each would be 36,500 damage. But, in firing it, all four of your systems sets are knocked offline for three seconds and have to reboot from 25.

And Mastery maybe uses the FDC package with Level 5 being a bonus to auxiliary power or something. Would be good for use on FDCs and other carriers.

And, as a little bonus, since they are freighters, they can fly their flag from any homeport. That is to say, they have access to all the name prefixes and all the registry prefixes from across the galaxy. Gotta get cut down on those tariffs!

I just kinda spitballed this from a mishmash of ideas as to maintain its freighter origins, but to also make it 1) appropriately Tier 6 and 2) desirable.

Also, in retrospect, I kinda made it a Q-ship - "...heavily armed merchant ships with concealed weaponry" used in WWI and WWII as anti-submarine ships. Which, all things considered, is kind of an appropriate methodology to rig the freighter-type ships for combat.

    Thoughts?

    Need help with a decision

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:44 AM PDT

Guys I need help with a decision

So tomorrow I shall have 5 x fleet modules and wanted to use them on a new shot, Currently running the T6 Fleet Galaxy Dread with Galaxy bridge of course :-)

I was thinking of getting either the T6 Fleet Ambassador or the T6 Galaxy.

This really is for looks, not interested in chasing DPS, well might be interested in tanking as this captain is an engineer.

The Galaxy has t he new skin which is awesome, but the Ambassador. Do I go the Ambassador as I have the Galaxy Dread.

I plan on using the Galaxy bridge with either.

Also Ambassador has temp mechanic ... I cant decide :-(
