Historical Note: the "Genesis system" was not the star cluster missions

    Posted: 25 May 2021 07:09 AM PDT

Common misconception: the "genesis system" was a magical system that randomly generated a mission in game when people were loading into a star cluster mission.

Actual truth: the "genesis system" was a tool the devs used to create missions, out of game.

To put it very simply, the "genesis system" was the mission building equivalent of hitting the "random" button in the costume editor. It threw together a bunch of random elements for whatever type of map they were creating.

But then, and this is the important part, they actually had to save that mission and add it to the game. The entire "creation" of the mission was done out of the game. Once it was added to the game it was just a saved mission, no different than any other.

So why were the star cluster missions so buggy? The answer is simple: because of the mad rush to launch the game(not Cryptic's fault, but that's a different story), they did not have time to test every one of these missions. Star cluster missions were only intended to be "filler" content, and were never a priority. And for that very reason, they never felt the need to go back and test/fix these missions after launch either. They were too busy fixing actual episodes and systems that mattered.

The point of this post is simply to clarify that misunderstanding of what the "Genesis System" was. It was not something in game that randomly created missions. It was a completely out of game mission building tool that created a saved mission like any other. It simply allowed them to randomly generate some map terrain and NPCs. But they still had to be hooked up to work like any other mission. And most of the missions they made with the tool were made under extreme crunch and only meant as temporary/filler content that they never had time to properly test.

Who would win an NPC battle between the Tzenkethi and the Voth?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 05:20 AM PDT

Last night I was having this discussion with my mate in a pub (after some copious amount of beer) and he asked me this question, both the Voth and the Tzenkethi ships are extremely durable and tanky, so they are both in Elite PvP setup, both NPC, the scenario will be,

The Voth fleet consists of 1 Voth Citadel dreadnought, 2 Bulwark battleships, 3 Bastion cruisers and 5 Palisade frigates.

    The Tzenkethi fleet consists of 1 Tzen-Tar dreadnought, 2 Rhas'bej battleships, 3 Broln'ta cruisers and 5 Shuk-din frigates.

The battle will be in the Dyson Sphere contested zone. Which side do you think will win?

    Ground Enemies Glitched

    Posted: 24 May 2021 07:11 PM PDT

I'm sure all of you have noticed this: Shooting at a Gorn Trooper in the canyon on Nimbus III, only for the Gorn to jump 100 feet (30 meters) or so in the air and land behind you, or jump from 45 meters away to 12 meters away. It isn't lag, they don't suddenly appear. You can clearly see them launch into the air and land much closer to you or flank you. So far I've encountered this on Gorn, Vaadwaur, Klingons and Borg.

Just to be clear, I'm aware enemy mobs and boffs can jump absurd heights to free themselves if they're stuck, but even on uncluttered maps this occurs, such as the canyon on Nimbus III.

So far it's just been annoying and benign. It also doesn't happen often, either.

I'll be playing through the Klingon War arc to see if I can capture this occuring.

Unclaimed STO Giveaways (not sure if they still work)

    Posted: 25 May 2021 04:23 AM PDT

    Hi, everyone.

I've been going through some old temporary documents, and I've found a couple of supposedly duplicate, yet unclamed STO Giveaway codes from around december of 2020... IIRC they should cointain either an Elite Services pack or maybe a T6 Europa, but I have no way of knowing without using them. The codes are free for grabs for anyone, provided they haven't expired and still work...

Due to STO bots prowling the reddit, a slight obfuscation is needed...

*TXYWEC* / 1st letter is the (first) letter of the Galaxy Class USS Enterprise-D's sister ship, destroyed in TNG's 2nd episode "The Contagion" and last letter is the first letter of STO's Bajoran interceptor

*SCES1L* / 1st letter is the name of Star Trek's omnipotent being(s) and the last letter is "the first letter of the fed side ***ntom Intel Escort

Official message about starting missions in private tab?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 06:07 AM PDT

Currently, some TFO's can be played with less than 5 players or even solo via the private tab. Is it known if this is intentional or a bug? I have come to love playing in small groups and solo and would not want to miss it.
