    Dear Cryptic, Timegates aren´t gameplay.

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:38 AM PDT

    The overabundance of "Defend until X" and other timegates has been my main criticism of recent Mission and TFO design. And Cryptic really hasn´t learned, judging from the new missions. Segments that consist of endless enemy waves spawning in until a hidden timer runs out aren´t actual gameplay and only serve to artificially stretch the mission time. And to add further insult to injury, it makes little to no difference if you actually fight those enemies or not- the NPC task isn´t finished earlier or later, and the "Destroy all remaining ships" doesn´t come up earlier or later either.

    Mindlessly blowing up masses of enemies isn´t fun if It contributes nothing to the actual progression of the game; You might as well put cutscenes in place of it if the player input changes little to nothing about the flow of the mission. There is no point in fighting if your actions have no consequences.

    Bond With Life is the best addition of this update and it gave me a reason to replay older content

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:15 AM PDT

    Forget about J'Ula and the Klingon War. The most fun I've had this update was catching pokemon animals with the new Bond With Life trait...

    It may not be much for the majority of players, especially those who hate the ground content, but stuff like this, or the additional tasks available to all the 'recruits', give me more reason to (re)play the game, than most of the brand new, yet same-y content like the episodes and TFOs.

    I can't remember the last time I was on New Romulus, but now I'm running around completing the long forgotten missions, while trying to get some new pets for myself at the same time. Two birds with one stone. Same goes for some of the episodes. Heck, I even replayed the dreaded Colisseum, just to get the Sehlats.

    Point being, I really appreciate the effort that was put into seemingly a simple trait, and honestly I'd like to see more "content" like this. Either additional tasks that would encourage players to re-visit old content, or something that would give us additional benefits for doing so. That is, as long as it's not turned into a daily grind.

    Any other kittys feel out of place in the last mission?

    Apparently Ferasans stayed loyal to J'mpok. My mains a sci kitty. Oh well.. Sher Kahn does whatever Sher Kahn wants.. (too bad Khan's a reserved name)

    Madran...

    Posted: 26 May 2021 07:06 PM PDT

    I noticed something in the first episode and hat's off to Cryptic about it.

    The dialogues with Madran (as well as with other NPC's, like Tarsev) vary a lot based on past progression.

    • When you talk with him with a brand new toon, he simply sugar talks us into him being innocent and his incarceration being a misunderstanding;
    • When you've played Partisans before, Martok initiates the dialogue saying he was in the process of tossing out of the airlock when Madran said he knew where the VIP is;
    • When you've already encountered him elsewhere a limited number of times, he points out we keep meeting him in unfortunate circumstances and we ruin his life each time we meet him;
    • When you've played most or all the past episodes involving him, he openly calls you his nemesis and doesn't even try to hide his despise.

    The same happens with other NPCs:

    • Tarsev either introduce himself or is either friendly or very friendly with you;
    • J'Ula and L'Rell either tell you or not about the fate of the Lukara whether you've seen it blow to pieces or not, or about Aakaar's hability to remotely take over starships.

    I also suspect we get a completely different sets of dialogues, each with the same variants if we're either DSC Fed, KDF/KDF aligned or anything else.

    Edit: With a DSC toon, J'Ula offers some level of apology when we enter the ground map, saying her actions were because she was blinded by rage.

    This could mean a total of more or less means 30 or so variants and that's quite an accomplishment!

    Hat's off for this, even if I stand by my other comment on the episode length.

    With my last key, and last hope in hell of getting it, no less. I mean, really, it was my last shot.

    Can't wait to take this beast out for a spin after today's down-time.

    Oorah.!

    Starship Traits still bugged

    Posted: 27 May 2021 08:59 AM PDT

    Missing Improved Critical Systems and Improved Temporal Insight on two toons. I have the regular versions, weirdly enough. I did try to see if changing maps helped, or I needed to reclaim them, or gently caressing my computer and telling him he was a good boy, but no dice.

    EDIT: This is specifically my Jem'hadar toon and one of my 2409 FED toons, but not my other 2409 FED toon for some inexplicable reason.

    Dixon Hill - the Reboot! (concept)

    Posted: 27 May 2021 09:06 AM PDT

    This comes from a discussion on the official forums, from a thread asking what the next story arc should be.

    user "gonalius" wrote:

    Largely suitable outdoor assets for a Dixon Hill adventure are in the game. The Kentari(?) world we visit has a very 'film noir' vibe to it that would require minimal alterations... That planet seemed to have a lot of effort go into the aesthetics for a tiny segment of the game that is over in five minutes.

    user "somtaawkhar" wrote:

    Dixon Hill is a novel series set around 1941. The Kentari homeworld is a far future cyberpunk city. They are two entirely different aesthetics.

    These 2 posts gave me the following idea:

    You know, that actually gives me a really interesting idea. In RL they are always rebooting old franchises and 'modernizing' them (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't). But anyway, imagine if within the Trek universe some Barclay-esque officer decided to 'reboot' the Dixon Hill series to give it a more contemporary aesthetic? I'm imagining something like noir-cyberpunk; maybe even in black and white? Hey IDK, but it's an interesting idea. And might make it more likely to happen if they are able to use some of their more contemporary assets.

    Thanks for the content, Cryptic devs.

    Posted: 26 May 2021 12:04 PM PDT

    I know a lot of us really strongly disgree with the direction the story took in this arc, but regardless it's appreciated that you're still putting in the significant effort of making playable story content and getting trek stars in to the recording studio etc.

    On a technical level too, the polish and quality is going up with every release noticeably, so that's also appreciated.

    I had fun with it, and look forward to whatever you've got planned next story-wise.

    So yeah, thanks 🙂

    Serious: Kudos to every dev who worked on these new missions in any capacity except the endless combat waves and J'Ula's story

    Posted: 26 May 2021 01:42 PM PDT

    A lot of people will agree there were 2 really bad things about these new missions (the endless combat waves thing and the way they handled J'Ula's story).

    But there are a lot of people who work on these missions that don't have anything to do with those 2 specific problems.

    So to every dev who worked on these missions in any capacity except for those 2 things, kudos to you. You did a good job (environments, NPCs, cutscenes, etc) and you deserve the kudos for it!

    And this post is 100% serious, not any kind of sarcasm.

    Kael: Request for the Tailor

    Posted: 27 May 2021 06:38 AM PDT

    With so many of the new uniforms using the enhanced color palate that the discovery show uniforms use, can we get some skirt options that use the same palate soon. It is almost impossible to match the existing skirts to the vast majority of the colors available on this palate and even when you can get close the old palate colors look flat and unattractive.

    arc patch notes

    Posted: 27 May 2021 07:08 AM PDT

    So in the recent patch note (27/05/2021 https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11489003-patch-notes-for-5%2F27%2F21), it says event campaign III so part three right? But from what I know the tholian event is part two. Is this a typo?
