Posted: 08 Feb 2020 06:10 PM PST There was a request to do this a little while ago, so I made a quick list. These are opinion-based, but may shed some light on these starships -- especially with whatever discussion ensues. Most of this is bridge officer-based, though I am also influenced by a couple of really-strong traits a few of these starships come from. I'm not including any T5-only starships in this list. Also, with the NX in the Anniversary Bundle, that ship is ranked by its performance only (not its strong trait & console as well). I normally talk about starships via PowerPoint instead of straight text and let the viewers decide for themselves, so this probably won't turn out well… #1: Kelvin Vengeance Intel Dreadnought Cruiser A 5/3 sturdy, flexible DEW starship with access to dual cannons & some of the best pets in the game, there isn't a lot to hate about this starship honestly. The trait/console aren't particularly great, but people buy this ship to fly it – so those don't matter quite as much. LtCmdr Uni & Lt Uni seating, while already have Cmdr Eng & LtCmdr Tac (which is desirable for DEW builds on a cruiser), and most of the "better" starships than this still have the same issue of an Ens Sci seat. Can't get more than 4 tac consoles on a cruiser without Cmdr/MW seating, and this ship has Cmdr/INT, so quite respectable. #2: Vaadwaur Astika Heavy Battlecruiser Similar to the Vengeance in the cruiser class & 5/3, but a bit older and a battlecruiser instead of a dreadnought cruiser – so it lacks the hanger bay. Still, it has a good console that gives it 10% CritH & 25% CritD when activated – so not a slouch in the damage department, and still holds up well. The 3 Lt seats (including a Lt Sci instead of the Vengeance's Ens Sci) holds it back for many. However, as Fed-Romulans cannot use the Vengeance, this is a reasonable lobi substitute for them if they don't want to fork out $200 for the Legendary Bundle's Kelvin INT Battlecruiser. #3: Sphere Builder Edoulg (Multi-Mission) Science Vessel The first Multi-Mission Science Vessel in the game, back when that class technically didn't even exist (hence it lacking in its name). Generally if you are asking for a dps science vessel, many refer to either this, the Eternal (C-Store), or a Crossfield (lockbox/promo). She skirts the line between Sci Vessel & Sci Dreadnought, so if you want a balance between them & a hanger bay this is the ship for you. Cmdr Sci/TO with LtCmdr Tac is quite potent, and LtCmdr Uni + LtCmdr Eng/INT gives it flexibility for how you want her to perform – and 5 sci & 4 tac consoles doesn't hurt either. #4: Na'kuhl Daemosh Science Vessel In ground combat, the go-to shield is the Na'kuhl Personal Shield due to its Time Slip passive – but what about if you could have that on your starship? That is what this starship gives you – it is only usable on Na'kuhl starships, but quite potent nonetheless. Combine that with its high maneuverability that rivals escorts, a built-in battle cloak, and a bridge officer seating mirroring the strong Edoulg in every way but the specialist seating – it is strongly undervalued in the STO community. #5: Husnock Warship Generally when people talk about what is the best Tac/TO starship, this is the one that is brought up. Not sure if Directed Energy Flux is still in the meta for Beam Overload or not, but still fun to use nonetheless. 5/3 warship with Cmdr Tac/TO, LtCmdr Eng & LtCmdr Uni seating, it is quite flexible in what you want to do on her. Husnock enthusiasts will buy the Miradorn's console and put it on this starship. The Miradorn is now available via the Picard Bundle instead of just the exchange, but is a little pricey there. #6: Tholian Iktomi The release of this starship killed the Tholian Orb Weaver from T5 boxes (the only science vessel from the exchange with a free T5U upgrade), so I do have a little beef with Cryptic still over its removal. People pick up this starship for its Improved Photonic Officer trait – that's really about it. The trait was in conjunction with the huge buff to Photonic Officer, which most of us in the community appreciate a ton. The ship is still serviceable, but many others out there do outpace it. Due to the usefulness of Improved Photonic Officer in just about all exotic-based builds, it is hard to not value it highly in this list. #7: FED/KDF/RRF Temporal Destroyers When the flight-deck cruisers got their significant buff, these ships were also changed to get a Cmdr/Temperal Operative seat as well – making them some of the most flexible destroyers in the game – Cmdr Tac/TO & LtCmdr Tac/TO, with LtCmdr Uni & Lt Uni. Although I don't think the trait measures up to many of today's science dps traits, its console is still fun as part of the 3-piece console set. Everything is the exact same between all 3 of these, so I have them at the same rank. Having a 4/3+1 layout holds them a little back vs the newer Temporal Warships from the fleet (that have 5/3 layouts), but still great nonetheless. #8: Paradox Temporal Dreadnought To be honest, all 4 of the Science Dreadnoughts in the game have their issues and are outpaced by many other starships in the game. Of those 4 though, this is probably the most balanced in both quality & pricing. 1.25 hull & 1.425 shields is great (only beat by the Annorax). It at least is a part of the 3-piece temporal set, which is fun to use. No Cmdr/specialist seat for her, though it does give access to decent pets for your other starships. If you want a sturdy starship and don't want to rely on the Na'kuhl Time Slip passive for it, this may be the starship for you. #9: Maquis Raider A miracle worker raider is honestly pretty awesome, and the only MW starship in the lobi store. Its trait is really situational, but its Plasma Storm Module is probably one of the better science clickies in the game that scales with EPG. Its also really annoying and fills up the screen, so there is that one little downside to it… As a raider, it gets all Uni seats outside of its Cmdr Tac/MW seat, so extreme flexibility at the cost of a rear weapon slot. #10: Herald Baltim Heavy Raider The other raider for the lobi store, and another 5/1+1 raider that is available. Its unique console adds cannon dps & teleports you to an enemy's rear arc, so can be helpful for newer players learning where the flanking angles of NPC's actually are in the popular TFO's. All uni seating like the maquis outside of the Cmdr Tac seat, and a LtCmdr INT & Lt PLT seating in there. I consider the Baltim a little more balanced stat-wise to the Maquis Raider, but the Maquis does get an extra console – so I placed it ever-so-slightly higher. #11: Xindi-Primate Ateleth Dreadnought Cruiser People buy her due to Superweapon Ingenuity – the trait that extends Beam Overload's duration by 5 seconds, so pretty much a must-have for that type of build. Honestly this ship is really boring vs any of today's starships otherwise (I'd even use the Fleet Cardenas over this thing). A 4/4 layout with only 3 tac consoles, no Cmdr/spec seat, a LtCmdr Uni/CMD [that you need to make tac to get the ship to work with only a Lt Tac seat on her] & a Lt Eng/INT. There are plenty of other dreadnought cruisers in the game that are cheaper & stronger, so I'd only get her for the trait if that is what you need for your build. 12: NX Escort Refit Although the NX's strong Beam Overload trait & Phaser/Disruptor/Plasma dps console is in the Legendary Bundle as an account-unlock for FED's & their allies, the starship there is a little hard to use (Cmdr Tac/TO, LtCmdr Tac, LtCmdr Sci/TO, Lt Eng, Ens Uni). Compare that to the bridge officer seating of the classic NX Refit (Cmdr Tac, LtCmdr Eng, LtCmdr Uni/TO, Lt Tac/PLT & Ens Sci). Still has a 5/2+1 escort layout & 5 tac consoles, so no problems there. For the vast majority of players, the classic version is much easier to use & perform well in, even with a lower hull/shield ratio than the legendary variant. If the trait/console wasn't in the legendary bundle, it would be much higher on this list. #13: Hur'q Nekcrid Assembly Multi-Mission Science Vessel For those that may think that the new Legendary Crossfield is the first science starship with a LtCmdr/CMD seat should really look at this starship. Also for those that wish the Legendary Voyager had a LtCmdr Tac seat & a 4/2 layout should really look at this starship. It's base stats almost mirror what we see on the new Voyager. Its trait & console are definitely fun to use, though I haven't used them in quite a while – so I can't really judge them too much for this list. Having 4 Tac & 5 sci consoles round it out to be a solid higher-hull science vessel – its lack of a Cmdr/spec seat is what holds it back. #14: Jem'Hadar Heavy Strike Wing Escort) Still having a 0.20 impulse as a Strike Wing Escort (formerly called Escort Carriers, but was confusing to players as the name "carrier" everywhere else meant 2 hangers and escort carriers only had 1 hanger) [and the RRF versions are still called Escort Carrier Warbirds for some reason…]. For its speed & its higher HP than what you would expect for an escort with a hanger bay, it is a doable starship. What holds it back is that it is an older starship with the 4/3+1 layout, vs the typical 5/2+1 escort layout we expect from starships today. If you can work around that, its LtCmdr Uni/PLT seat & 3 Lt seating shouldn't trouble you as much. As it is older with the classic weapon layout & bridge officer layouts, it is here in my list. Still a fun ship to fly and updated VIL looks are good. #15: Tal Shiar Khlinae Adapted Battlecruiser I am plating the Khlinae here, as it is at least trying to be advernturous and different with a Cmdr Uni seat on her. Unfortunately, with a 4/4 layout and LtCmdr Sci/CMD & LtCmdr Eng, & Lt Tac/INT – it has only felt good to me when the Cmdr seat was tactical honestly. It gets sensor analysis as a non-science vessel if that matters, but only 3 tactical consoles does hurt her. It's a starship trying to be a jack-of-many-trades and is a little medicore at them all – but the borg looks & borg-ified Romulan bridge are fun to visit. Not all starships have a cool bridge anymore, and Cryptic was trying with this ship. If a Cmdr Uni seat sounds fun, and you don't want to fly a raider nor get the Jem'Hadar Light Battlecruiser from lockboxes, this might be the ship for you. #16: Walker Light Exploration Cruiser I remember this ship fondly because it was one of the first federation starships available to Romulan captains (alongside the Crossfield & Sarcophagus). There's a LOT of ill blood around her due to its STO skin being locked behind the poorly-priced Discovery Operations Pack. As for the cruiser-subtype of the cruiser class, only this starship & the Temporal Light Cruiser currently have a 5/3 layout and still have access to all cruiser commands, so that is something. For today's STO, the only standout honestly is the Obfuscation Screen – if you like it or have the Discovery Operations skin, then get the starship. #17: Elachi Ornash Battlecruiser Though outpaced by many other starships today, this was clearly supposed to be a torpedo-oriented starship with a LtCmdr Tac/CMD & Lt Uni/CMD seating. Generally today, lobi/lockbox/exchange starships all have 2 different specializations in their 2 seats, so that is a problem with getting her today (you can get the Fleet Cardenas & have more hull/shields than this 1.40 hull & 1.2 shield ratio starships & have more CMD seats than this starship…). Fine, I'm biased against this starship. It has Cmdr Eng, LtCmdr Tac/CMD with a LtCmdr & Lt Uni right after – so still flexible. It's 4/4 layout and subpar specialist seating is why this ship isn't any higher. If this ship actually was a 5/3, there could be an argument that it is up there with the Vaadwaur Astika – if it had a decent console/trait that helped it in today's meta… #18: Xindi-Reptilian Sistruus Escort This ship is more or less the NX, but available to everyone and moving its Ens Sci seating into a LtCmdr Sci seat on her (with no specialization on it, so you have to use 3 science powers). Most DEW captains don't like science powers, so this ship has to be ranked a lot lower. I think this ship looks great for its age (though don't talk about its outdated interior…). 5/2+1 layout with Cmdr Tac with LtCmdr Eng/TO & Lt Uni/PLT, so yes – an NX substitute if you can't access it but want a similar feel (especially on the KDF side). #19: Hazari Destroyer I feel bad for this starship. She looks plain but stylish & cool to me – I just wish there was something to entice me to fly her more. No worthwhile trait, console, a 4/3+1 destroyer layout with a LtCmdr Sci seat – and the only specialization seat is a Lt Tac/INT. Just about any fleet destroyer is going to be able to do more than what this starship can. #20: Zahl Heavy Cruiser Most people that buy this ship only get it for the Invincible trait. It still has reasonable stats with a 1.38 hull ratio & 1.30 shield ratio, but with the stat inflation current starships are receiving nowadays – and that it is just a cruiser so it can't use dual cannons – leaves a lot to be desired. With Cmdr Eng, LtCmdr Tac, LtCmdr Uni/CMD & 4 tac consoles, it can work as a torpedo boat if needed – though there are better options. #21: Tzenkethi Rhas'bej Battlecruiser This starship feels like a tease of "why are you flying this starship instead of the Tzen-tar?" It has abysmal speed but 1.10 hull & 1.45 shields for a cruiser-class with only 3 tac consoles. Having CmdrEng + LtCmdr Tac & LtCmdr Uni/MW does help, but I can't explain it – it just feels so bad to fly her (even for me as a mainly-cruiser captain), so not a ship I can really recommend to anyone. So why is she not at the bottom? #22: Son'a Intel Battlecruiser Ok, this one I am biased against with a passion – simply because it is a Cmdr Intel without a cloak of any kind? Really?!?! Something established for just about all other Cmdr/INT starships in this game since the spec was released was to give these starships a cloak if it wouldn't have one, or to improve its cloak to a Battle Cloak (KDF starships) or an Enhanced Battle Cloak (RRF starships). And yes, the new Legendary Kelvin INT Battlecruiser should have a cloak – just saying. I will only give it a minor pass as my FED-Romulans can fly a version of the Kelvin Connie now… But seriously, this ship is ok, with Cmdr Eng/INT, LtCmdr Tac, and 3 Lt seating (one a Lt Sci…), and 4 tac consoles. It may be a little dated and lackluster of a battlecruiser, but it will perform fine if you want to fly around in a crescent moon that isn't a Lukari starship… #23: Voth Bastille Temporal Science Vessel I do like this ship a lot, but that is because I like the Voth ships a lot – and especially because I gave out so many Voth Bastions to many newer players in the game over the past few years (back when those used to be super cheap in the game…). This ship is basically a single-character unlock Eternal with different looks and access to the Warp Repair Ship console (from a different Voth ship) instead of having a hanger bay. If you have that self-rez console, this ship might be valuable to you if you want to tank on her. Otherwise, the C-Store Eternal is generally better and cheaper. If you are wondering why this ship is so cheap on the exchange right now, this is why – people that like the layout will just buy/fly an Eternal and have it for their entire account. Help with NVIDIA Freestyle (not working) Posted: 09 Feb 2020 10:41 AM PST Hello. I am having issues getting Freestyle to work all of a sudden. Last week it worked, this week it does not. I'm not sure if it was the latest patch or other factor. I've tried just about everything. I cleaned my driver using DDU and reinstalled it and GeForce Experience along with my monitor driver and control panel, I've reset my control panel settings and STO's game profile. I've turned HDR on and off. I've turned the in-game overlay on and off in GeForce Experience. I've tried 2 different clients, Steam and Arc. I've rebooted countless times. All to continue getting the 'A supported game is required to use this feature.' error message. All other games are running just fine, the issue is isolated to STO. Another issue is that when I exit STO I get a strange flicker on my taskbar tray and context menus most noticeable when I right click the Start Menu (Win10) that is only fixed with a reboot. I do meet hardware requirements and have the latest GeForce Experience and NVIDIA drivers installed. I'm not sure what else to include but I want to see if anyone else was experiencing this same problem or has any ideas as to what is wrong. Thanks and have a great day! [link] [comments]
To intimidated to return to STO! Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:58 AM PST Hi all, I stopped playing STO in 2014 approximately. I am a huge Trek fan and enjoyed the game, running a Sao Paulo class as a Tactical Captain and trying to observe a strict Starfleet flavour; phaser weapons in both space and ground and keeping a realistic contemporary appearance to my bridge crew and away teams. Now, I want to return but so much has changed, I'm a bit intimidated by the updates and such - is it still a worthy game to the franchise? [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Feb 2020 10:08 AM PST Played the game a few years ago with more of a pew pew style just smash through missions not really learning the intricacies and nuances of consoles and things. Started up again recently and paid more attention and tried to learn and spent more time on duty officers and crafting too. Up until recently all was well and was comfortable with my offence and defence on the ship, then hit level 60/65 and getting blasted off everything in sight. Below is my setup I'm looking for advice and suggestions on what will stop be getting wiped out so easily. Starship experimental weapons? But as the mission needs to be completed I thought I'd go back and try it 1 more time, it crashed as soon as I tapped A. Now gone back to crashing before fully loading into the game again :-( [link] [comments]
