It's sad how they put so many great ships into this game, and essentially lock them behind a solid brick paywall.

    Bryandt's Guide to STO F2P

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 05:14 PM PST

So, given that Timberwolf has started a F2P series for STO, I figured now would be a good time to put my 2 cents worth in. I've been playing STO as a F2P player since the game went F2P back in the long and ago, first on PC and now on PS4. This list is really just suggestions for new players who can't or don't want to put money into a Lifetime sub or spend a bunch of money on ships. For those of you who are already doing at least some of these things, you already get where I'm coming from. For those of you who are just starting out, here's some things that may be helpful to you.

    1. Have fun. This is the Prime Directive for any game, whether it be STO or any other game out there. Any time a suggestion on this list comes into conflict with this one, this one wins. Every. Time.
    2. Don't sweat builds until at least level 45. That's the point at which you'll be able to start using Mk XII gear and your endgame journey really begins. Up to that point, don't sweat it and go wild. Run those rainbow builds (if it's your first character, you'll probably end up doing so at some point early on simply because you don't have the resources to buy a full set of gear and having to rebuy gear every ten levels is a bad investment anyway).
    3. Roll as many alts as you can reasonably manage. The reason for this is for the resources you can cultivate with multiple characters. It's the difference between being able to refine 8k dilithium per day and, say, 16k or more per day. The more dilithium and energy credits you can generate, the more you can afford to do as far as builds go. Just don't bite off more than you can chew. Generally, I find that at least one character per faction (Federation, Klingon Empire, Romulan Republic, Dominion) is a good place to be in, is very managable for most casual players and will get you the resources you need.
    4. Designate one character as your crafter. All of your characters should be leveling up their crafting schools for traits. However, getting the crafting duty officers for just one character for some of the special gear can be expensive. So designate one character that's going to be responsible for crafting things like the TR-116b or that Aegis set you've had your eye on. The rest of your characters can devote all of their duty officer rosters to solely generating resources.
    5. Run admiralty as often as you can. Admiralty can be rough starting out, but will get easier as you max out each admiralty campaign for every character you own. Even after you've done that, keep running it. Specifically, run the Klingon and Ferengi admiralty for more Dilithium, EC and GPL, all of which you will need. There's also some relatively cheap T5 ships on the exchange you absolutely should grab just for their admiralty cards. The more ships you have in your admiralty roster, the more often you will be able to que up your daily missions and the more resources you will generate.
    6. If it's free, grab it. I don't care what it is. Some website offering a Free T4 ship or a shuttle? Grab them if you can. That's free stuff that will help you in the long run, even if you don't fly them. Free boosters, free bridge officers, free
weapons... That's all resources you didn't have to pay for, either with RL or in game currency and will give you more leeway for your builds later on. Same thing applies to events. It doesn't matter if you want to fly that event ship or not. Grind it out anyway. You may eventually find its trait useful or need it for an alt or even just use it for the free admiralty card. Yes, it's a grind. Just do it. It will benefit you later on.
    7. Be willing to spend hours, if need be, replaying a mission over and over again if it gives gear or traits that you can use. That being said, don't be afraid to use Rare weapons if Very Rare aren't available to you. Put your build together right, you'll still be able to hold your own in most TFOs.
    8. See a build you like somewhere? Well, you're probably not going to be able to reproduce it without spending a ton of money to get the traits and ships you'd need to copy somebody else's build. Those guys on Youtube? They've been playing the game for years and years and either spent a ton of money or have built up massive resources to be able to make those builds come to life. Unless you're in that position, you're better off playing around with traits you actually can get and figuring out what will work for you. Don't shoot for top DPS. That's not F2P friendly. Shoot for being able to contribute to your team and learning the mechanics of the TFO you're doing. That's going to carry you much further than whichever flavor of the month trait is being showcased that moment.
    9. That being said, if there's a skill or trait you know will be useful regardless (for me it's Kemocite Laced Weaponry) and you have the EC to get it off the exchange, buy it. There's no point in hoarding all that EC and Dil if you're not gong to put it to good use.
    10. Consider carefully whether or not to join a fleet. There's a lot of good perks to joining a fleet. There's also a drawback. Beyond having other people to run TFOs with on the regular (in a good fleet), there's also some really good gear that you can only get from fleets. There's also fleet ships, which are easier to get than ever thanks to Tier 6 reputation projects. The down side is that fleet projects are generally hungry for two things: Duty Officers and Dilithium. You need to contribute to fleet projects to help your fleet grow and generate the fleet credits needed to get that gear. Fleet projects, by their very nature, are gluttons for both of these resources and can make your own personal projects suffer if you end up putting more dil into the fleet than you do getting upgrades and such. You'll have to weigh the pros and cons of whatever fleet you're in and act accordingly.

And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. If you've read this far, thank you and I hope you found something that helps you.

Does % damage add up or compound (multiply with previous value)?

    Amazing luck or not?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 07:08 AM PST

I got 500z and went to open 4 infinity boxes, first box I got a t5 requsition pack then a T6 on the 3rd. Is this normal to happen? But anyway I got a sphere builder raider from the t5 and a kelvin timeline enterprise from the t6. Sadly the shard just went down to pach the xmas update before getting time to play em both. What can you tell me about both these ships?

Why do strike wing escorts have more fore weapon slots than heavy strike wing escorts?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 03:00 PM PST

Question: the new SW escort class has 5 fore weapon slots, while the Akira/Alita/Armitage only has 4 despite being a heavy SW escort. Shouldn't the heavier vessel have more firepower up front?
