The Path via 2399 [some Picard spoilers]

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:57 AM PDT

My attempt at meshing together STO lore and Picard, just an early attempt - I may have missed a few things that ought to be accounted for but many items just aren't worth mentioning. Got a different idea?

    2379 - 2384

Following the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, Riker takes command of the USS Titan and is joined by Troi. The Titan begins diplomatic negotiations with the Romulans. Donatra has sized de facto control of the Romulan Star Empire and appoints an interim senate of her supporters. This leads to an outcry from opposition figures; and the Remans, angry at their loss of power after the death of Shinzon, threaten another open revolt. Donatra grants them the planet Crateris as a token concession to buy time as she solidifies her position.

On the outskirts of Romulan space, a mining vessel discovers a dormant Borg cube and attempts to conduct salvage. They inadvertently cause the dormant ship to partly assimilate their mining vessel before a Romulan patrol ship intervenes and shuts down the cube. The incident and the dormant cube is kept classified; Nero and his mining crew are kept quiet by allowing them to assist with salvage.

The Female Changeling is sentenced for war crimes and sent to Facility 4028. Odo meets with Laas, who has found and taken into servitude a group of Alpha Jem'Hadar who refused to surrender and go to the Gamma Quadrant. Odo asks him to rejoin the Great Link, but he refuses and continues his search for the rest of the 100. Bajor accedes to the Federation.

The Federation begins economic assistance to Cardassia in exchange for complete disarmament. The Cardassian Self Defense Forces are limited to internal police actions. Gul Madred goes into mining operations and begins employing ex-servicemen made jobless by disarmament.

    2385 - 2387

The Enteprise-E detects fluctuations from the Hobus System and, after careful study, Starfleet comes to the conclusion that the resulting explosion could wipe out several sectors of Romulan space. Admiral Picard takes this to Donatra who indicates they have already been aware of the problem but have been unable to find a way to safely neutralise the star. Ordering a full-scale evacuation of Romulus would also have been politically impossible due to the crippling effect on the Romulan economy; leaving the empire open to invasion.

EDIT: Possible replace Hobus System with Romulus System, but requires VO changes to Taris.

After direct interventions from Spock and the unification movement's new leader, D'Tan, Donatra accepts Federation to help with the problem. Picard convinces the Federation to build a vast evacuation fleet, and appeals to the Vulcan Science Academy to help neutralise the supernova, should they fail. Donatra remains on Romulus as a show of strength.

On First Contact day, for an unknown reason Starfleet synths launch an attack on the Romulan evacuation fleet being built at Mars. In the fallout, the Federation bans synthetics and pulls all support from Romulus, including the Vulcan research project.

Admiral Picard threatens his resignation if Starfleet does not aid the Romulans. They accept it. Spock decides to take matters into his own hands and manages to steal the Red Matter that the Vulcan Science Academy developed and the experimental Jellyfish ship.

With Starfleet withdrawing and the Romulans unable to provide enough resources to the evacuation, outlying colonies and the neutral zone falls into disarray. The Fenris Rangers emerge to keep some element of peace. Seven of Nine, likewise shocked by the Federation's lack of humanity, decides to aid those taking action to help and turns her back on Earth and Starfleet.

As the sun explodes, Donatra is still on Romulus. Having an experimental Borg transwarp installed on her ship, she makes an escape but is never seen of again.

Nero, distraught at the loss of his family, takes the Borg technology on his ship and heads to the neutral zone and begins attacking Federation patrol ships. News of a Borg-modified Romulan ship quickly makes its way to Starfleet. Nero detects Spock's Jellyfish. Spock declares that he has a mission of peace but his story is seen by Nero as further evidence of a plot to destroy Romulus and pursues Spock. Spock succeeds in neutralising the supernova, but both he and Nero are lost.

    2388 - 2398

The Romulan Star Empire collapses with the loss of the homeworld and Donatra's highly-centralized leadership. Admiral Taris uses her remaining fleet to distribute aid across the Empire. As the figure with the greatest logistical leverage, she takes on a de facto leadership role and convinces colony worlds to organize under the banner of the Romulan Free State. While nominally decentralized, the Tal Shiar rapidly gain a foothold at all levels of government.

The galaxy demands answers to the Borg-enhanced Romulan ship that attacked Federation ships on the neutral zone. Taris denies it was Romulan, then that it was known to the government, then simply blames it on her predecessor when Starfleet Intelligence uncovers the existence of The Artifact. The Federation and Klingon Empire withhold aid until answers are given. Taris gives in and agrees to a treaty allowing all powers access to The Artifact in exchange for economic assistance.

The Klingons, however, remain distrustful. Martok's signing of the treaty and provision of support weakens his position. Hardliners led by J'mpok say the empire should reclaim its lost Romulan territories, not help them. Martok, however, cites how they fought alongside them with honor during the Dominion War and refuses to attack an ally when they're weak.

On a hunting trip, J'mpok is attacked by Species 8472. He manages to defeat them and capture one for questioning. It reveals that they planned to replace him and infiltrate the High Council. Already enraged by Martok, he considers that Martok himself may have been replaced. Regardless of the situation, J'mpok challenges Martok to a dual and wins. His first act as chancellor is to annex several Romulan border worlds, including Khitomer. The Federation condemns the invasion but do little to stop it.

Nanietta Bacco's support for Romulan and Cardassian aid becomes increasingly unpopular, as was the fact that the First Contact Day attack happened on her watch and her lackluster response to the Klingons. She declines to run for another term and Aennik Okeg is elected President. He slashes external aid budgets leading to a surge in support for the True Way on Cardassia. Gul Madred allies with Laas and the Alpha Jem'Hadar, who build their own military.

    2399

    Star Trek Picard

    2400 - 2409

The synth ban is lifted and synthetic research resumes. Based on the Borg research at The Artifact, the Federation begins use of transwarp conduits for the first time.

Klingon Intelligence claims it has found evidence of Species 8472 infiltration in the Gorn Hegemony. J'mpok orders a full invasion of Gorn Space, straining relations with the Federation who order J'mpok to open peace talks. J'mpok refuses and annexes the Gorn Hegemony.

Recent losses by the Romulan Free State lead to Taris' leadership becoming increasingly unpopular. Several worlds previously very loyal to Donatra fall behind Admiral Sela, who offers a vision of a renewed Romulan Star Empire as a great power once more. Taris refuses to step down, arguing that a return to a centralised Empire is the last thing the Romulan people want.

Taris is missing one morning when her housekeeper checks on her. Some speculate Tal Shiar involvement, but there is little proof. Sela moves her fleet on key worlds and succeeds in claiming the leadership after several planetary governors step down for personal reasons. She declares herself Empress of the new Romulan Star Empire. Remaining opposition groups go into hiding and begin an organised insurgency centred around the Unification and Reman Resistance movements.

J'mpok declares that Klingon Intelligence has uncovered Species 8472 infiltration in Federation border worlds and demands the individuals in question be handed over to the KDF. Starfleet Intelligence denies the accusations, saying the Klingon's sudden obsession with Species 8472 is a fantasy to cover irredentist claims. J'mpok reminds Okeg that his recent head of Starfleet Security was discovered to be a spy, and has little faith in the Federation handling matters themselves.

Klingon forces land on Federation border worlds and start detaining and testing the civilian population. Starfleet attempts to remove the Klingons by force. Several skirmishes ensue until Okeg and J'mpok declare a truce and meet at Khitomer to negotiate. In the middle of the talks, the Klingon delegation fire at, and miss, a high ranking Federation official, claiming they were a spy of Species 8472. The Federation delegation openly questions the Klingon's sanity. Talks break down and the Klingon fleet enters Federation space.

Ground weapons - blue holo glowy bits ??

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:42 AM PDT

So I love STO and play it daily but one thing that sometimes pulls me out of the RP element a bit is the weird glowy elements that appear on phasers and rifles etc. Is there a way to get rid of them or are they just a thing that happens to your weapons visuals as you reach a higher level ? Any help would be awesome thanks

    Newb winter wonderland question...

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:52 AM PDT

I've done the race 3 times (lost each), attacked the snowman bad guy twice and I think won. Did the pie eating contest. And the daily event thing still says I have not completed the daily. Do you have to exit out of WW to get your daily credit? I don't want to drop the mission and have to wait 20 hours. But I'm about to just to see if that works.

    Akira bundle?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:55 AM PDT

So I happen to already own all the ships in the bundle, and I just upgraded my Fleet T6 Akira with the new skin, so is there any reason for me to get that bundle? Does it add anything new that I don't already have? If not, why is it purchasable for me? Wouldn't I be buying something I already have?

    Looking for fleet(active)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:36 AM PDT

Firstly, new member here. I've been playing STO since the Agents of Yesterday expansion. I'd like to think I'm an experienced player, but I still have much to learn, especially regarding ship builds. Anyhow, onto my main point: I'm in a fleet on every character on my account, and none of them do anything. I've never seen any events posted. I'm getting rather tired of it. Now, I'm not a ridiculously social player, but I like to have fun and run events with people.

I'm wondering if there is a fleet out there that actually does things and posts events. I don't mind discord, but my system is rather mediocre, so running STO on the settings that I do is the most it can take. The devs put in the events tab on the fleet menu for a reason. If one runs a game on high settings, using an external application can lower one's framerate dramatically, or cause lag spikes from network issues. If there are any fleets out there that do things with people who can't run discord, hit me up.

Most levelled character: M'Rontaakk@spock#1073, Starfleet-Best gear, ground setup, pilot escort, MACO, engineer, absolute tank(especially for an escort) Command & Commando, Best tactic: Orbital strike ambushes, group enemies with various control effects, and unleash the orange beam of death.

KDF: Kutagh@spock#1073, Klingon, DPS build, heavy destroyer, engineer, tac/eng build, best tactic: Tractor beam an enemy next to an exploding ship.

Romulan: Vraicius@spock#1073, tactical romulan, RRF through and through, ground DPS, space-fortress, not much dps but more of a science/eng space build. Command & Temp. Ops speciality, didn't die in combat until level 60. Best tactic: Survive for a stupid amount of time. Also, Aceton Beam III.

Newb: Bogdanov@spock#1073, MACO Tactical, ground sniper, strike team specialist, ambusher. Space escort, cannon build.

I'm online from about 7:00 PM until Midnight, and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM EST.

Fridays vary considerably, but I'm willing to stay up(now that I can, given that we're all stuck at home).

Also, I know a bit of German, for any fleets out there with a large German population.

    Weapon Haste and power levels

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:24 AM PDT

I have a T6 Tac odyssey that i just outfitted with all mark XIV Gear or better. 4 piece iconian set with fleet warp drive, and 2 piece prolonged, and 2 piece trilithium. Also sensor linked arrays, and one more omni. my question is this, before i decided to go with weapon haste like the prolonged and trilithium set my survivability was really good and nothing really hurt me. Now I shred through enemies very quickly and my shields get chewed badly. I have a good transfer rate for power but am i missing anything? and i know it would be better if i had all the specs on here but i am mostly at work. any suggestions would be appreaciated

    QQW bugged (surprise!)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:08 AM PDT

The event timer in QWW is bugged so you can't tell which event is on and which is next. While I'm thrilled to revisit the place could the timer please be switched on? It's something of a hassle without it.

Does anyone know of a fix?

Tiny annoyances that I wished were fixed.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 08:25 AM PDT

It amazes me how far STO has come since its introduction. I was in like day 2 (PC), and played for a year or so, got bored, left. Came back played for a month, got bored, left. So on and So on until this year after probably 4 year gap and its pretty amazing some of the cool stuff they have added. But with some of that, comes some annoying things.

    1) I love how you can search your inventory and other ships for gear, and how it automatically switches over when you switch ships. I look kind of silly now have like 7 aegis sets lol. But I find it really odd/annoying that it doesn't also show the stuff in your bank. I literally lost a console for like a month before I realized it wasn't pulling that stuff. I wonder if this was an oversite or conscience choice on the developers part. 2) Maybe its a screen resolution thing, but in the admiralty ship selection, when you go to select a ship, it pops that window up over the ships you've already selected, so you can't really see what extra stuff those ships provide. Tried moving it, and its a screen that seems to move with the main box. 3) The stats for gear/ship seems to be kind of random as far as whether it takes into effect the gear thats installed on the ship or not. For example, I've got 4 of the polaron damage boosters. All my weapons are like 1100dps, ok it looks like its working. Next time I log in, all of them are like 700-800, but the lesser on in the inventory is like 1050, but when I swap them out the old one is back at 1100. Same with hull numbers. Add a +hull piece, the number may or may not change. Probably has something to do with sector space, but it makes setting up stuff kind of difficult to know what is what.

All in the changes that have been made have really made the game a lot of fun. What other annoying little things have to come across (not really bugs mind you, or the happy little lag of death thing that sometimes happens).

Does anyone actually like all the mini games?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 08:55 AM PDT

I confess. The mini games they force us into just make me mad. Every time I see one pop up. I think someone spent too much time coding them and now they are trying to justify the effort.

Does anyone actually enjoy them?? I certainly don't, but I guess there may be people who do? I wish they would remove most of them. Maybe a few in missions that are unique. But the rest? Nah. Take them away.

    Tough Little Ship

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 08:56 PM PDT

    Hello there!
I'm kind of a boomerang player in that I come back after long hiatuses away, mostly just to fly around ESD and put some old lockboxes on the Exchange, so I've kinda missed a lot of finer details on endgame (beyond space barbie) systems, like rep and upgrades.
I started poking at searches the last couple of days, but I get a spectrum of information from the last four years, so I thought I'd jot down some questions here and hope y'all had some time to spare and help me. Please? :)

I'm flying a T6 Tactical Escort, because I love the Defiant, and I like sticking to phaser weapons and quantum torpedoes...but I like leaning towards survivability and mobility. My captain is ENG.

Should I be leaning on more shield emphasis, or hull cap/repair?

I like the flavor of pulsed fire from cannons, and back in the dark ages I slotted up with turrets in all three aft slots for constant fire...should that get swapped out for an array? I know the Kelvin Timeline connie has phaser arrays that are visually pulsed fire, is that the only one?

I see that some gear slots have visuals that alter the cosmetics of the ship. Is there a source site that describes these, so I can figure out what to work toward to give my ship a more stealthy look?

When I get random green gear drops while I'm out playing around, should I be selling those on the exchange or salvaging for materials? I haven't ever gotten into crafting, but I heard you need to craft nicer Mk XV stuff? It'd be nice to get my gear upgraded to a more comfortable point. I hit 65 and things started hitting hard again and my Mk XII stuff didn't feel quite as potent, obviously.

I've got more questions, but I've already imposed on your eyeballs enough. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read, and doubly if you offer up some constructive insight.
