Spoilers / Fridge Logic: The latest episode of Discovery just validated Cryptic's approach

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 03:48 AM PST

So in the latest episode, we get a look at the makeup of 32nd century Starfleet. It is incredibly eclectic - we hear that there are holographic ships, organic ships and conventional hulls; we see Voyager-J which is almost identical externally to Janeway's ship but, word of god, now sports modern systems; and things like the Nog which are barely recognisable as Starfleet hulls. The Discovery itself, despite being described as a museum piece, is immediately accepted with "we'll refit her and she can be useful", and a time-displaced crew from a millenium ago is accepted without much question.

The rationale seems to be that 32nd century Starfleet is so desperate for ships and crew that they will accept all of these things - there's no time to be picky during a survival crisis.

Of course, all of this is very familiar to STO players - the crazy mix of alien, modern and antique ships; the time-displaced crews from earlier eras. Except now it's canon in the latest series. I can only imagine STO's writers being very pleased with themselves when that all came out.

    It dropped !

I started STO around 3-4 weeks ago after first having tried the game a few weeks after it initially launched, Life got in the way but finally managed to come back, Anyway, Still learning how everything works, Which weapons compliment each other etc... but from my first day playing a few weeks ago I have been drooling over the Spearhead/Discovery as I really love the show and the spore drive is just sexy.

After initially hearing the pack that you can choose it from was for sale on the exchange I saw it up for 1 Billion... yeah no, I took my chance with a ten pack of keys and on the 6th Infinity box the ship selection pack drops, I almost slapped a badger in excitement, I usually have the luck of a rancidly drunk leprechaun !

She's a beauty, Using the M.A.C.O set for visuals.

This Ship Looks Awesome! I hope we can Fly it in STO

Tillys screen had alot of different views of Voyager, The Deflector looks more like the Dauntless Hull from Hope and Fear. The reason I know its voyager is that it says on her screen Uss-Voyager-J

    Disco Captain Species

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:09 AM PST

Did the devs ever explain why they didn't allow Disco captains to be Andorians or Tellarites?

It just strikes me as odd that two of the founding species aren't available.

Is story mission difficulty/enemies based on the current ship you're in, or your level?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 05:53 AM PST

Hey guys, new player here and I'm loving the game so far. Huge trek fan and gamer so idk how I didn't know about this game for so long.

Just had a quick question though that I couldn't find anywhere on Google or the wiki. Is the difficulty of missions based on your current ship or based on your level?

For example: I've been using cruisers until level 20, then I just switched to a heavy escort. If I buy a heavy cruiser refit now at level 24, could I keep using it at level 30? Or would it now be worthless compared to the ship I would get that level.

Another example, could I go back and fly my first ship in the next story mission I have to do? Or do I have to be in the best/biggest possible ship I can fly?

    Thanks for any info!

    Galaxy-X Navigation Lights

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 06:20 AM PST

Aren't Navigation Lights on ships meant to be red on the left, green on the right, and white down the middle?

The Galaxy-X seems to have white on all three nacelles and the front-middle of the saucer, green by a single phaser strip at the very back, and red everywhere else.

    Removed Klingon War Missions

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 09:25 PM PST

    Whining/Complaining Time...

So I know they removed these missions to revamp them and involve the new Disco content. But I really wish they would just revamp those missions, THEN work on the Discovery stuff. As a player who focuses on the story first and the gameplay second, it feels like I've read chapter 1-3 of a book and then chapters 4-6 are just gone. I just really miss the Guardian of Forever lol

I don't play STO often, sometimes years go by before I start playing again and I was bummed to find out those missions were removed.

But I get it- gotta capitalize on having Disco on the air now, and all that. Still- hope they revamp that sooner rather than later. FOR THE RECORD- I love the revamping they've done so far, so kudos!

One Little Ship and other Rep traits gone

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 10:49 AM PST

I've noticed on most of my toons all of the Tier 5 rep traits are gone since the patch, the gamma, dyson, delta and more aren't listed anymore. I've even had some starship reps reset and the ship mastery with them.

Doff Advice & Help *Specific Questions*

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 10:37 AM PST

***Engineering Cptn; MW Gagarin Beam Boat; I run phasers and I'm just playing for the fun***

Since all of the previous help I got here was well, so helpful, I thought I'd ask the masses again for some help. Specifically I'm trying to get my SPACE Doffs arranged.

My first question is: how do I get more Doffs? Excluding the Exchange, Zen Store, Missions and some I got from duty assignments, I don't have a clue how to actively find/farm them. Are there any good or reliable ways and how?

My second question is: regarding the above, I'm currently after one specific Doff and it's troublesome to find. I'm looking for an Energy Weapons Officer: Chance to reduce the time to recharge when using beam special attacks. Can I target this specific Doff or any Doff I'm after?

My last question is more of an opinion really. My intended Doff loadout is this

    • Projectile Officer: 20% chance to knock 5 seconds off torpedo cooldowns.
      • I have 'Law' so this is covered. I use a Kelvin Torp Mk 15, 4 second CD and Prolonged Torp Mk 12 that's 9 seconds (off the top of my head). I'm a beam boat so I'm only having Law slotted for the off chance instead of stacking three officers for multi chance. I'm in a MW Gagarin with the FaW procs Torp Spread and vice versa trait so I like it when Law procs at the same time so I can quickly fire off back to back spreads.
    • Beam Officer: 50% chance to knock off up to 10 seconds.
      • This is what I'm truly after, since at a glance it seems like reducing the CD on FaW and Overload would increase my DPS fairly well. I'd like two or three sure but I'd really just like that first one first. Question: am I mistaken about just how good this seems? If not, should I use 1, 2 or 3 of these officers?

With my leftover slots (haven't gotten the Fleet upgrade yet but intend too) I am less sure of whom to slot in. My short list is:

    • Reducing the CD on Subsystem targeting. I recently added in a Target Shields Subsystem Boff Skill so I was wondering if that was a good idea or a waste?
    • Beam overload can grant penetration. It's at best 30% chance to give 35% pen. seems great but Idk. Thoughts?
    • both the Crit and Crit severity Doffs. At best it's a 4% chance to give 1% stacking to 3% Crit or 10% stacking to 30% severity. I feel there's better but am I missing something?
    • Lock Trajectory: While Lock Trajectory active, each second 25% chance: +20% Bonus All Damage to All Weapons for 1 sec. Seems amazing to get 20% damage but I fell I would want as many of these slotted as I'm allowed to make full use of it, unless I'm wrong?

There seems to be a many brilliant Doffs out there so I may very well be overlooking some gems but these above are some I've been eying recently and am most interested in hearing about. Thanks in advance for any input that can be offered!

UFP Admiralty question - dilithium instead of specialization points?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 10:19 AM PST

The UFP Admiralty says that specialization points will be converted to Dilithium if at the "current specialization cap."

    1. What is the specialization cap? Does that mean maxed out for your primary and secondary, or maxed out for all possible specializations.
    2. If you meet that criteria, how much dilithium do you get in place of the 2 specialization points for re-completing the UFP campaign.

Now that I've got all of my characters at level 10 on Admiralty, I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to re-do any of the campaigns other than Ferengi for the dilithium pool.

Legendary Walker Light Battlecruiser / Secondary Deflector

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 10:18 AM PST

I know it's a bug, but I personally think that it should stay on the ship, I am aware that this is irregular since the ship can have at it best 2 science lieutenants. Overall there are better Battlecruisers like for example the Gagarin class and if we also a factor that the traits and the console are not something revolutionary make this ship look average at best. The Secondary Deflector gives it that something interesting as a mechanic and potentially gives it an edge in comparison to the other battlecruisers without making it too overpowered at least in my opinion.

Does the Colony boffs abilities stack?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 12:48 AM PST

So I'm trying to build an optimal DPS build, which the only thing I think I'm lacking in, is the bridge officers, so I was wondering if I fill my whole bridge seatings with kentari boffs from the colony, will there abilities/traits stack?

Something small, but surprised & glad they fixed the AFK NPCs in Best Served Cold.

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 04:42 PM PST

The previous run of BSC I remembered Kagran and Martok AFK-ing throughout the entire TFO and some players voiced that on this sub.

But today I ran BSC first time and the Rotarran suddenly flew in front of me and joined me shooting enemies. I still didn't see the Khitomer around but that was during the Prisoner transport segment so I'll close one eye on that.

The other players were handling the transports while I was solo-ing the infiltrators around the stations, and most were cluttered around Alpha while I was alone on Beta and Gamma during the Hauler segment. Much as I didn't require the extra help, I am glad they fixed the AFK-ed NPCs, at least the Rotarran since she stayed with me through my solo areas with the Infiltrators and later the Haulers.

Cryptic, STO, and u/ambassadorkael: It's Been 24 Hours And No One Has Even Acknowledged That Traits Are Broken Again -- Why Should We Spend Any Money With This Kind Of Service?

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 01:03 PM PST

Your lack of consideration for players, your paying customers, is getting out of hand.

You know how frustrated people were after the traits broke during the last update and how time-consuming a process it is to fix them.

Regardless of the team's good intentions to make a QOL change, it's now happened again and you're not even bothering to say "hey the update is gonna break your traits again, sorry for the inconvenience but afterwards they'll be saved in loadouts."

    Where is the community manager?

Why is it becoming so hard for you to admit something went wrong and players will be inconvenienced?

We get nothing. Silence from you!

Not only that, I looked back at ambassadorkael's Twitch videos and the clear distain he has for the 38,000 subscribers here on Reddit is ridiculously disappointing.

This subreddit is not some cesspool like ESD zone chat. Just because people here voice their opinions and aren't afraid to let you know they're not fans of everything STO does without question doesn't mean we're trolls.

We're not here to pat you on the head and say everything you do is great. We're paying customers and customer satisfaction is a part of your job!

The holidays is usually when I spend A LOT of money on sales and giveaways for my fleet.

If this is the level on communication we're going to get from Cryptic and the Devs and u/ambassadorkael when things go wrong (NONE) why should players keep doing business here?

The players deserve to hear from you STO, come out and say something -- even if it's just WE'RE SORRY.
